Are yoyos with a polycarbonate body and steel rims generally louder than aluminum mono or bimetals? I watched @LX_Emergency’s excellent comparison video on the Speedaholic series, and the Speedaholic FX, polycarbonate body, was noticeably louder than the others (https://youtu.be/sMmHYlsuRFA?si=rS9OS3eouncfMaSN).
Is this louder volume the same for other polycarbonate bimaterials? iCEBERG? G Force? Sa? Hypercut? SONiC WAVE? iNTENSITY?
Do you notice the volume of the yoyo much at all? Does it affect how much you enjoy a yoyo?
Just as a disclaimer, this isn’t a question about playability; just wondering about the sound.
I think a plastic yoyo is inherently louder than a metal yoyo. The plastic yoyo has more resonanence in the body than a metal yoyo which causes it to amplify the sound, much like an audio speaker.
I tend to find that if I clean and lube my bearings, plastic is not loud at all. It’ll always be louder than metal, but a clean/lubed bearing makes a huge difference to the noise.
And I swear it’s not because I’m losing my hearing!
Yeah, I figured they would be inherently louder because the material vibrates differently than metal.
@Yospeedracer I agree the sounds makes a difference in the overall experience of a yoyo lol. I tend to like quieter yoyos just because I tend to like quieter environments. An obtrusive yoyo sound sort of ruins it for me.
I can go both ways. Side effect yoyos are not totally quiet but the majority of my yo-yo’s are hear a pin drop quiet. Outside at the club meets it’s so loud out that none of it matters
They do seem loud when the bearing is dirty or just loud. Usually nothing a toothpick-tip-worth (not a full drop) of very thin/unresponsive lube won’t fix.
Plastic yoyos and hybrids seem to amplify any sound the bearing is making. I was going crazy for a little bit trying to clean/find a clean and quiet bearing to put in my unprld Beach so it wouldn’t be super loud.
