I’ve got a complicated relationship with my employer. I’ve been here 17 years as of last month. I started as a holiday temp taking customer service calls, making like a dollar or two over minimum wage. They paid for half my college tuition. They gave me training and experience. They let me work my way up from the bottom to SDE II. They worked with me on a medical exception to work from home due to my disability. I’ve had a frankly fantastic and privileged career.
I’m still worried and stressed when stuff like this happens though and I’m definitely busy in the aftermath of this, and my career hasn’t always mirrored everyone else obviously rip my team.
I am glad that your experience has been a positive one. My biggest peeve was employers that wanted me to take some skills tests to get interviews. To me; that is an auto-rejection. With over 30 years experience, my resume should speak for itself. When I finally got to the interview stage with my current company, they had three senior engineers grill me on Java, Javascript, database and design questions for three plus hours. I have no problem with that at all. But to just get the interview? That is a lot of tests that are long and tedious.
Yeah I’m honestly kinda lucky I came in and worked my way up like I did because I haven’t had to do testing, leetcode nonsense, or interview for a job in at least 15 years
Even when I moved from BA > BIE > SecEng > SDE II didn’t interview for any of them. Just kinda pin balled around.
