Assuming the prototypes actually play well when I get them I’m going to make two threads here, one for PIF and one to keep up with info and news!

Yeah but the pain I feel when looking at BST prices is very real. :skull::headstone:
A purchase like that won’t be for a loooong time

I feel that!!!

It’s like… sell off all the lucky trades and gifts, or hopefully win a giveaway lolol

Too many amazing yo-yos out there!!

The only way I can see, is save up enough money over the course of an extensive period of time, and then wait for one to pop up… Then be fast enough to get it. The last one I saw sold within 30 min.

what if the axle breaks tho
or is ultem just that indestructible?

If it breaks I imagine it would be the same as if I broke one of the axles in one of my one piece wooden yo-yos, it would be broken and I would be sad. :woman_shrugging:

One piece yo-yos are pretty common when it comes to 0a and the like so I’m not really seeing it as a problem necessarily, provided the prototypes hold up well once they arrive. Possible failure points to my eye are the response holes and axle. The axle right now is going to be 8 mm thick with a slight upward curve to the walls to help strengthen it and string center. If the prototypes fail at the holes, I’ll reduce it down to 4 holes spread further apart, if the axle fails I’ll thicken the axle up a hair.

And if that all fails I’ll probably either give up or machine it out of PEEK.

Just curious but why a one piece? Wouldnt a 3 piece be easier to machine too?

A lot of different reasons! I’ll break down some of my main ones.

A simple one is that there is something magical about a good one piece for 0a when it’s done right. Like some of my DLC wooden yo-yos are just about the smoothest spinning fixed axles ever.

A big one though is durability. I want a relatively thin axle, 8 mm right now, if I add in a hole in the middle for hardware, that will put the actual material thickness a lot thinner (about 2.5 mm) making the axle overall weaker unless I beef up the axle thickness, which ideally I don’t want to do. Having multiple pieces also adds more possible failure points, more places for a break to happen or sand to get into, threads to strip, etc.

It also turns out that price is higher on a 3 piece version, mainly because I have to have threaded inserts installed or machine a guts system. I priced out a 3 piece threaded version and it came to about 30% higher price to machine. I don’t know for sure but I suspect it would also increase the likelihood of b grades due to things like threads not perfectly aligned, balancing halves, etc. I like making accessible yo-yos and would probably be selling them at or near cost and the cheaper the better that way.

Last reason is assembly time and effort. I’m disabled, have a full time job, 2 kids, and a fair number of medical issues. I also don’t really have time for a second job, or a desire to turn my fun hobby of making yo-yos into a job. The possibility of mucking with lets say 500 halves and 250 axles (assuming a certain amount of b grades) to make a 200 piece run… I just don’t see myself being able to pull that off.

Thanks for the detailed response! Makes sense!
Ultem would be cool!

My “Holy Grail” would have to be a 28 stories peak, or just any peak at this point. From the first time I tried one at my local club back in 2013, I knew I’d love to own one one day.

My only thought was, oh no, what if the plastic axle burns through like the blanks

But upon researching, you clearly thought of that, because this plastic is like adamantium from what I have read.

The Amber color is awesome too

Yeah, technically there are two plastics stronger (PAI and PEEK) but they cost significantly more and are only a small fraction stronger in most situations, plus they are a lot uglier :joy: think ranging from beige to greenish beige.
