Before the C bearing was popular people used to “beefcake” with 2 small bearings to double the gap width. I believe YoYoJam were the first to popularize the C bearing in the Dark Magic, Hitman etc with their o-ring response and twist-adjustable gap. Then it really took off when Frank Difeo started using the KonKave bearings in his yo-yos.
