What yo-yos does everyone use for 3A and 5A?

The yoyo I’m considering is a copy of a yoyo I own that has enough damage already that it has a deal of nail vibe. For 1A this is not a problem, but if I were to buy another to use with it in 3A would the difference in condition, and therefore play, be significant enough to be a problem?

Nah that wouldn’t matter really and that’s dope! Just also consider the price like if that one yoyo is pretty expensive, it might be cheaper to get two yoyos that could be even better for the style. But yo, either way that is dope and lemme know if you have any questions or anything abt early 3a

i use g2 covenant for 3A, narrow and very stable which is perfect for 3A. for 5A i typically use the YYFr Stingray proto or a Loadout.

No 3A for me right now. But I’ve got a few 5A set ups. G2 Covenant, Luftwerk Stelvia XSP, MagicYoyo K2 (don’t recommend this one, it works, but not great spin times)

Thinking of making my OD Thruline into 5A next

Of these I really like the Covenant but it was a gift from someone who wanted to encourage my interest in 5A, so I’m very sentimental (Thanks ToiletCircle).

I think the rule of thumb is that if it’s good for 1A it’s good for 5A, I have found this to be reasonably true

For 5A I have a Throwback Canon. For the price you get both the yoyo and a counterweight so $45 makes sense. I’ve heard that others are better, but since I’m just starting the weight feels good. Not as fun for 1A though compared to the other yoyos I own

Current 5A setup. The Werrd SplitSecond is what I’ll be competing with on Sunday, but for pure 5A pleasure you can’t go past a stepped organic and the SW Flying Lemon is just so satisfying

Don’t play 3a. But I’ve got some 5a dedicated ones.

From left to right.

Freehand AL,
Bullock DunkLX
(Saboteur underneath that accidentally wound up in the shot…but it IS really nice.)
Dressel Emotion
Yozean Divemaster
Atmos Snowberry
MYY Z01 Focus
RCS Guitarist
YYF Genpop
C³ Galaxi Diver V2
MYY K3 Aurora P
C³ Ghost IX

Please be careful with that LX for 5a, and use a SOFT cw.

I was using mine for 5a, and the cw smacked the plastic around where the rim is, and its so thin there that it chipped a good piece of the plastic off, making it a fancy paperweight

For real? Probably doesn’t do much better on a hit from the ground then…yikes.

What did Jake say?

He basically said due to how thin the plastic is around the rims, its not the most impact resistant dunk.

It is what it is, its not the first yoyo I break, and probably won’t be the last.

What are those dope looking counterweights?

Phase 3 of my newest design, if they hold together. Calling them either Cocoons or The Rebound King

CWs on the left are the culmination of my experience throwing freehand and Jax and playing ball sports in general. If not for the bruises on the backs of my hands I’d say they’re the best weight ever. CWS on the right are soft-bakes, an experiment in consumable weights made to take dents and bruise less.
The Cocoons have a core like like those on the left but fully wrapped in poly string. Softer, quieter, good rebounds and super hi-vis.

Those Cocoons have my full attention for all the reasons you state! Would also be highly UV reactive with most string wraps. Let me know if you ship a bunch stateside. Not sure 1-2 will be very cost effective.

@everyonehere with 5a setup..

what is more important to you

1.) ratio balance weight between counterweight & yoyo
2.) weight of the counterweight itself

i notice some counterweight feel good on some of my 5a yoyo but worse on some other. very hard for me to amass enough counterweight to mix and match to find perfect pairs.

what is this golden ratio for counterweight weight and yoyo weight?

Weight of the counterweight itself, as well as the weight distribution of the body of the counterweight is all that matters for current comp trends.

The ratio philosophy is outdated, if only because it’s shifted with time because of tricksets shifting. Depending on how many dependent vs independent tricks you do (dependent being tricks where the cw movement directly affects yoyo movement and vice verse) you’ll prefer different ratios. String lengths on average have also gotten considerably shorter than in the past where people cared about ratio, and different string lengths would also shift what ratio you like. This is coming from Jake Elliott so it’s not just my personal opinion.

Most of the top players now are just using a specific counterweight that they like how it feels to move, and they adjust their string length/string segment ratios/play speed to adjust their tricks to match the setup. This is how you get Sora Ishikawa playing on a 73g yoyo with a 9g counterweight. Weight distribution reasons are also why some players like PON have ditched the bearing in their sig counterweights.

such good information thankyou

Agree on weight as a ratio of string / string segment length. I like long string for fun but play very short for comp

Interesting… Lots of good info, I’m still trying to find what cw (as well as cw and yoyo weight), yoyo, and string length I like. So far it’s a bit under my 1a length so that I can try tech without giving shorter string cause I don’t think I like a shorter string for 5a imo

Considering the yo-yos will get beat up and destroyed for either style, I’d wait till the end of the week for the yyf sale and pick up some good throws cheap or b-grades and embrace the destruction.
