The best feeling is when you open a new yoyo from its box and then grind it and you go: ooooooooooooooooooo, thats nice.
My smoothest yoyo is my outlier mini, but for some reason, whenever I throw it, it always has soo much vibe, but then when I just grind it, its smooth! Kinda confusing :l
I had an atmos stormberry and the finish was great for grinds. To be honest i really didn’t like the feeling of the finish, it reminded me of a mac laptop, and so I sold it. I don’t grind much and prefer a pyramatte finish or a slightly tacky finish like on an mcmo or raw titanium throw. Its all preference.
Ill never forget my Anti-Yo Dri-wet. I bought it from â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– . The first time I threw it I knew it was special. It had no vibration at all. Felt like I dropped the string with nothing on the end of it. WHYYYYY DID I SELL IT???!! GODDD WHY!!!
The Crucial Grooved bearings are a big part of that I think. Smoothest bearing I own, I have a lot of yoyos that feel smooth on a finger grind but not many bearings that let them feel perfectly smooth on the string.
If you mean the smoothest finish, the KnotCreators Zaphkiel. I don’t think it is advertised as having any kind of special finish, but the combination of shape and surface treatment stands out to me.
Pretty much most yoyos these days are dead smooth out of the box. Smoothness used to be a bigger deal in the past (decade+ ago) when that wasn’t always the case. Hot take, but I don’t think smoothness should even be in the conversation about how “good” a yoyo is anymore - if anyone uses it as a metric to judge a yoyo, they probably don’t have the ability or experience to judge it or describe it based on design or playability merits that actually matter. That said, to answer the question, anything manufactured by FPM or any brand who uses them consistently has the most “is this even spinning” level smoothness and OD has the least consistently smooth throws in my experience.
Aster, my 1a only hades’, panorama, annihilation mono, veylaa, dynames, and probably more are all at maximum smoothness. I don’t check for vibe with a fingernail test unless I’m going to sell them but I did check some bc of this question. If my yo-yos are vibing enough that I can see it with my eyes or feel it on the string, that’s because I threw the Yoyo bad.
I wanna expand on this real quick because I think a lot of newer or younger players struggle with the concept of “what is fingernail vibe” I know that i did when I first started out. I watched a million videos but eventually it was thru experience alone and accumulating and trying so many different yo-yos that I came to this exact conclusion. To sum it up I’d also echo what @SR1 said about all throws being smooth out of the box generally. And any throw that’s not smooth on every throw but can be smoothed out with fingernail or sometimes it throws smooth really just means your throw is off and u need to get used to throwing this particular Yoyo. Then once i realize this I still struggled with that concept cuz every Yoyo is so different. I could get two new yo-yos and one of them I might get what I now call “throw vibe” just once or twice, but on the other Yoyo it seems like 8 out of 10 are consistently viby. And then u wonder if it is ur throw still or the Yoyo, well usually that happens when I get a throw that has an extreme weight distribution. For example I experienced this exact thing just the other night when I got in my freshly dirty vhs and c3 windoundary. Zero vibe on vhs but the windoundary is a super wide boi that stretches into a huge diameter, and 9/10 throws I was getting throw vibe but then I’d get that one that was dead smooth so I knew it that basically what was happening is that this Yoyo has an extreme weight distribution and I just need to adjust to it, not the other way around. Now after throwing it for a couple days is dead smooth 9/10 throws.
I’m sure most players already know all this but this is for players like me who struggled to figure this out for a long time.
