personally i drop it right out of the package and ding it before i love the yoyo too much
Try to keep it mint as long as possible
My normal practice is to just use it.
I find that works fairly well all around.

I put string on it and play it? I mean its a yoyo… If I ding it I do… I dont go out of my way to not ding it, but I also dont toss it on the floor to break the anno in… You guys are weird…
I usually get Really Excited! No Matter what Yoyo it is:
$5 yoyo, $20 yoyo, $50 yoyo, $75 yoyo, $100+ Yoyo, I Still Get So Excited that I can barerly Hold Myself. Oh, And I Try to keep it as Mint as possible as long as I can, just like yoyo jake said.

I throw mine till I ding it. Then I throw it more. If I don’t like it I force myself to throw it for a while longer to see if it will grow on me. If it doesn’t it goes into my case for one of those days I’m bored with all my other yo’s.
I seriously watch out the window for like 2 hours and when the mail man comes i se that package slip into my mailbox and as soon as the mailman is out of sight i sprint outside rip the box to peices as fast as i can and throw it for hours. I LOOVVVEEE the feeling of that package in my hand 
I rip open the box, make sure it’s connected to the string so that I don’t damage it, throw it a couple of times to see how awesome it is, and then replace the string with a YoYoJam 100% polyester string.

Well, I personally start w/ each new throw on carpet Then work my way to wood. Then, if I feel like it, concrete :0
Pretty much, I try to keep it mint.
If it is mint, I’ll play it a little, but not much as I would be afraid to ding it. Once I ding it, I’ll use it a whole lot more. I kinda like my yoyos to come pre-dinged since I won’t have to worry about them 
The first thing I do when I get one is open whatever the yoyo is in, give it a brief look over, then put a string on it to test it out.
String. Look through the goodies. Throw. Try some crazy stuff.
I tend to throw over carpet in my house (because its everywhere) and mostly do 1A. Many of my throws just tend to stay mint or in almost mint condition (exception being my first four metals when I began throwing, my 888 has silver rims from dings, and it came black ;D). When I get a new throw, I have fun with it and see what I can land.

If I am not going to sell it, I’ll ding it or at least try, so that the first ding isn’t so hard to accept later on.
Are you being serious? Why would you purposeful ding your yoyo? I don’t put mine on a velvet pillow in a glass case but I still try to take care of it.

If i get it from someone who doesnt know how to keep their bearings in shape, or from a manufacturer that uses alot of lubricant then i immediately desheild and clean the bearing.
