Play silly games win silly prizes.
Back when I was really cutting up Freehands, I certainly ended up with plenty of Dice. I would stack them up and call the the wall of voodoo, lol.
The dice in this image is just a percentage of the full count of dice I have… what’s the most interesting thing is that when I throw 5A now and then, I don’t even use a Die…. I use the blue ball.
Dave and his nickels. Man that was a minute.

Freehands machined for Viper rubber… bored for Cemter punched Ballistic caps… held in place by press fit rims of Patriot caps.
And…. Transitional Freehand with delrin rings, linen countersunk linen pads and custom caps…

Hello i have a o boy duncan that needs this love and attention.
Wow.
The axle just shattered on looping, its easy fix for fixed but you say with a henery yoyo made hybrid that is creative nice
When that happened to me I drilled out the wooden remains and used a steel axle from an imperial. Then you’ve got a killer q ship. Jmtc, worked for me.
I was hopi g you would find a picture of the mod contest bulldog fh. Did ot ever escape its prison cell after the mod contest?
I will try that. I have another chance in getting another o boy Dunkin’ yo-yo that will be on the 4th of July I’ll have it shipped so yeah I’ll definitely try that I can get some Imperials too.
That would definitely fix the axle situation has to fix it again perfect suggest
Every time I see polished Henry’s hubs I feel a little happier. Instant nostalgia and still just looks so good.
I badly wish I had taken more pictures of my mods, I have very few of them and even less of the yoyos.
Awesome to see this stuff, thanks for sharing and inspiring us old modders to make cool yoyos.
■■■■■■■ incredible!! Ohh to hunt that guy down would be legendary
I spent so many years polishing aluminum Harley cycle parts, I just seemed compelled to not leave dull yo-yos alone, lol😂
People would ask me, ‘Why do you mod so many yo-yos’?
My reply would be, ‘I don’t do things(tricks). I do things(mod) to things.
…When I was a kid, if my brother and I got toy cars for Christmas, my brother would play with his car. I would take mine apart and then put it back together again.
My dad would drive his old Chevy truck all over town, the day before trash pickup. He would pick up bicycles people would put by the curb. My Dad and I would build Frankenstein-bikes from the various parts, lol. I was always ‘fiddling’ with whatever… I’m kinda surprised I don’t play the Fiddle, lol.
Waaay back when, when I was a fairly a prolific modder of yo-yos, people got to know my work from my postings… But, there were so many really good modders all over the Country. I consider myself to fit somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Kyo (Kyle Weems) posted up a nice comment about my Nostalgic images. But, I am pretty sure many of the newer guys playing yo-yos are not aware of his many Amazing Mods and from scratch designs. His work is outstanding! He had no fear of working with any material and tried things that hi lighted his knowledge of yo-yo physics.
Kyo also has the rights to Captain Yo’s 5 books on Yoyo Physics. And he provides them online for free(I’m pretty sure?) > Kyle wants people that can wrap their heads around the dynamics, to do just that.
KYO spent several years, judging and/or competing in the World Yo-yo Mod Division. He also set up a tabletop lathe each year and gave tips and modding demonstrations.
No kidding
Man, I’m glad yoyo makers finally figured out how to make good yoyos, right out the gate, but I do wish modding had as big of a presence now as it did back then. The real golden age of yoyo.
Is the modern equivalent of modding now 3-D printing? It seems like new shapes and ideas can be readily realized using modern technology. Why mod when I can just print a new one?
3d prints are kinda cool. You got a point.
Call me old fashioned, I guess. I think modding is wayyy cooler.
Doesn’t mean I won’t rip on a print, but it won’t be as fulfilling as ripping on a masterfully crafted mod. Prints also kind of feel like “disposable” yo-yos, while a good mod feels like a treasure to be cherished.
You have to make the primary distinction between 3d printing and ‘modding’
If you 3-D print a yo-yo, you are making the yo-yo.
If you get an existing yo-yo and you do things to it to make it look and or different or both, you are modding the yo-yo.
Now, if you start with an existing yo-yo and you decide it needs more rim weight and you can add that to it by 3-D printing rims of some dense material, then you are modding.
But if they had another world yo-yo modeling competition and I just decided to enter to see what would happen? And only one other guy on the planet was interested in also entering the competition. And I had leaked out a little preview of how I was going to get a just released Plastic yo-yo and do some things to it to make it look different and play a lot better, I would simply be executing modifications to an existing design.
If the other guy entering the contest, also decided to leak a little preview on what he was going to do to beat me into the corner… And he said I’m just gonna make a yo-yo from scratch using my state of the art 3-D printing machine. well, I certainly wouldn’t consider that modding. He is literally making something.
Now, if the guy said, I really like the newest Duncan 1A Yo-yo. But I think the bearing size, bearing seat, response area, etc., should be changed so the yo-yo would even play at a higher performance level. So he clamped the yo-yo halves To an equipment table and routed out the centers of the yo-yo halves. And then proceeded to 3-D print entirely new core areas of the yo-yo to fit the new bearing size in accommodate the response pads, and that is modding Of an existing product.
So…… 3-D printing can definitely be used to effectively mod a yo-yo. If you’re starting with a yo-yo already made. But I certainly wouldn’t consider it a modern version of modding.
