So, a few hours ago, I went into a Japanese restaurant across the street from where I work to pick up some food. The employees behind the counter, their concentration seemed focused on the TV screen on the other side of the room. I was looking up at the menu as I approached the counter And could hear the TV, Wasn’t really paying attention to it kind of because I was on a mission
One employee decided to take a break from watching TV and ring me up so I could get out of there. I just curiously asked him What were you guys looking at? Yo-yos they all said, yo-yos. Suddenly, at that moment, I recognized the voices that were on the screen. The news was doing a Segment on Justin Dauer And his mother, I turned around and started laughing that I hadn’t figured out what was up sooner. Nevertheless, I was happy and I’m always happy when somebody puts anything on the TV about yo-yo players or yo-yo playing in general.
They asked me do you know that guy? I said I certainly do. We don’t know each other very well, but yes I do know them and I have met them. They attend meetings at a yo-yo club right here in Southern California called the DXL yo-yo club.
One of the guys asked me have you ever gone to a meeting? I said you know it’s kind of funny in a way. I was a founding member of DXL years ago, but I haven’t been to a meeting in the longest time. But they usually meet every month, and have a great time hanging out.
So the guy asked me do you have a yo-yo of your own? I told him no I do not have a yo-yo of my own. I have 1500 yo-yos but I don’t have ‘A’ yo-yo.
I certainly don’t play anything like that. That guy on the TV was better than me when he started, lol. Now… After a few years of serious practice, even his mother‘s better than me. They all laughed. The boss said next time you come by for some food, bring a yo-yo with you and show us a trick or two. I told him, I can show you guys some tricks, but it won’t look anything like that guy.
As I was walking out, I turned and told the guys I always have a yo-yo on me hanging from a belt loop but you can’t see it because when I come in here, I never tuck in my work shirt so you would have no way of knowing… One of the guy said so you have a yo-yo with you right now? I replied that I certainly do. So the boss said why don’t you show us a trick? So I took the titanium mustang off my belt loop and said OK here’s a couple of tricks for you. And those guys were speechless. You know people don’t know beans about yo-yos when somebody at my level Seems impressive. They seemed extra fascinated because I’ve been going to that place about once a month or so for the last year or two, and they never knew much about me? Which is really funny when you think of it because I don’t really know much about them either, lol.
I was very happy about seeing Justin and his mom being given some TV screen time. Justin has come along way as has his mother. They are both most excellent ambassadors for yo-yo playing and just having fun in general.

But I just wanted to let you guys know somebody knows we’re out there. I mean even during the 2024 Paris Olympics there’s a new station that actually feels that yo-yos are something worth posting up about on the screen. We call TV. .
