US government shutdown impact

No politics or blame. Just a place to chat about being impacted by the US shutdown.

For me I’m a contractor and capped in hours atm till funding resumes and if it continues too long then things might get weird/rough. Also was planning to use a federal park nearby for my sons birthday but now have to mahd other plans.

Basically I’m stressed cause every week it’s like hmm do we have a job still or did things change again.

I’m thankful I still get paid during this but I do worry it’ll get worse before it gets better and the reduction in pay is kind of rough on the meantime. Not life breaking because I can cash out PTO to supplement it for now…

So anyone else impacted either in work or things that are shutdown?

Don’t make this more than it is please and if it feels like it’s not worth even chating about it here feel free to remove it. I’ll even tag @jhb8426 for awareness

Thanks for the heads up. As long as people just use it to discuss their circumstances it’s all good. Just keep politics and the blame game out.

I can only imagine how stressful that is! Not knowing sucks and well, it’s just not right. I hope it’s a short turn for you and all the thousands who are in the same boat.

Also been doing a bit of Uber and grub hub and to make up for lost time but yeah… thankful I signed up for those and kept them going little every month since 2022 as a stop gap

Our town supports 3 military bases locally.

There is a lot of stress around here. Armed forces are still working… but no paychecks.

I pray it gets figured out sooner than later.

I have a college friend that owns a government consulting company in Virginia. His people get hammered when this happens. Since they are furloughed, they get no pay. They also get no back-pay since they are not able to log billable-hours during the shutdown because they are furloughed hourly employees. It is the outsourced consultants that bear the real pain.

My friend gripes because he has to continue to provide benefits even though no one is billing. After visiting his house; I do not feel even remotely sorry for him.

I heard it’s @jhb8426 's fault. But what do you expect from someone from that party?

As I understand it, it’s due to an unresolved spending bill. Both sides can’t come together and figure out how to squeeze more out of Joe Everyman? We used to be a country…

But how will our corporate overlords manage without the subsidies?!?!

I heard the shutdown was because the wooden, fixed-axle folks are being unresponsive.

FYI, if you’re a USAA member, they have programs that can help. 0% interest loans, deferred payments, etc. Hope this helps.

This is a true statement.

Also I’m a usaa member and they can kiss my McNuggets. Have a nice day.

In the most simplified terms, a government shut down is essentially the result of our very well paid officials, unwilling to work for the good of the people and focus more on the benefits for themselves and the special interests that most of them represent.

When the government shuts down, it should be the law that the congressman, the senators, and presidents pay be suspended until they settle their differences. Considering there’s no penalty for allowing the general public to be punished they will play their games… That’s exactly what they will continue to do… Play their games and we suck eggs. That’s it in a nutshell.

As noted previously more interested in how folks are being impacted directly less on how people feel about it. Even if I much agree with most sentiments just trying to give a place for folks to gripe about the very impactful stuff happening to them like job loss and such or the silly inconvenient things like their plane was delayed or the park was closed and junk

I was a contractor, but my contract option was abruptly not renewed recently as part of the cuts made. So I am kind of in the same boat I would have been in anyway. Although, it’s a different kind of stressful than being furloughed because there’s no uncertainty.

For all the employees’ and contractors’ sake, I hope it gets resolved quickly. Not to mention all the important medical research being put on hold.

yeah thankfully the few contracts still providing me hours to charge have funding through to 2026 so I’m not too worried yet. If it goes into the 30 days plus mark I might get cut from my already reduced 32hrs a week to 20 which would hurt and force some decisions on my part as my time off will be burned up by then too. I don’t see much urgency on the part of congress and I do worry this will drag on toward the end of the month.

I’ve never been a government employee but I can certainly empathize with having been laid off in the past. It’s one of those things that can blindside a household for no good reason. Wishing you the best my friend.

Not my first time. 5 years back I worked for a hedge fund that death spiraled for a year. I let my team go in 4 different waves before it was down to me and another engineer and I left by choice at that point. In the end I wished I was gone in an early wave they all got severance packages I got a firm handshake and to keep my company laptop as we cleared the floor from one of the offices that lease was being termed early… so yeah maybe getting some flash backs to previous experiences

Yeah, that’s been my experience as well.
