Underrated and Overrated throws

Nailed it. My guess is that people who like organics, and the style to which they lend themselves, are really into Atmos.

I feel everyone forgets that these are a signature YoYo for a player who deserves all the hype!

Off the top of my head…

Underrated: Hollywood Modern YoYos Dopamine.
A classic, tried & true design (based on the Rec Rev Freq. Wave, which was based on the CLYW Chief) that is performant enough to keep up with pretty much any monometal on the comp landscape today. It’s at a nice average midweight of 65.8 grams, but feels slightly heftier than other popular mono offerings, like the Spultra. Has a weight distribution similar to that of a bimetal. Was my favorite throw besides the Klondike that I picked up at Nats this year. From a smaller company so it doesn’t get as much attention.
Honorable mention would be the IQ… that is a banger that deserves way more love.

Overrated: Another vote for the OD Top Deck, as some others mentioned. This is a good playing yoyo and everything, but it could be so much better with some tweaks. Definitely not worth all the recommendations it gets (unless you’re ONLY looking at OD’s, since I guess it is one of the better overall OD offerings). A common complaint I see about it that I 100% agree with is that the edges are too sharp and it would be much more comfortable if they were ever so slightly rounded out. If you catch it in a way that isn’t perfect, you can definitely feel that sharpness and RIP to your fingers/knuckles if you knock into them mid combo. It’s also a sluggish yoyo IMO. The Dopamine is a yoyo that feels heavier but NOT sluggish. TP also does this well with so many of their models. It has to do with weight distribution, and I feel like if some of that weight was pushed further out towards the outer edges, or just shaved off completely, they’d have a much better playing yoyo. Would be a fantastic candidate for their 20/20 revisions series, as it could be a great yoyo with just a few tweaks.

Also agree with @cayce on most A-RT yoyos being overrated. I’ve tried a majority of their metal offerings and the value is laughable, the QC is horrible and the designs (if you are after something even mildly performant) are usually just straight up bad. I will say, there are exceptions: the Grail is a yoyo deserving of it’s GOAT status… the 420 is up there, but most of the other stuff is mid to trash tier.

Worth the hype: Klondike, Spultra, literally any Freehand (minus the Delrin & full size AL version IMO)

Damn had never heard of the dopamine! Can def see that chief DNA on the design. Will add it to my bucket list

And they’re hella fun to play.

Based on reviews and things I’ve seen and read about it, I think the Hummingbird by YoyoFriends is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great yoyo and I gave it a great review but, in my opinion, it’s not worth the price. There are a number of cheaper yoyos, some considerably cheaper, that play as good or better than the Hummingbird.

Underrated: Magicyoyo N11

banger yoyo that people hate on because it’s not a “cool” yoyo, it’s just a yoyo that’s pretty good and super cheap and affordable to everybody

N11 isn’t cool?!

I don’t think the hyper budget MYYs are underrated because they have a bad rep, I think they’re underrated bc many ppl haven’t actually tried them. From what I’ve seen, nobody that’s tried the N11/N12/Node think they’re bad for the price. I think the people that are recommending like the Replay Pro/Variant/etc. instead of it just haven’t actually tried the MYYs.

I find it akin to like a random Chinese company’s hyper budget yo-yos. If you look on aliexpress or other websites of that nature there’s a ton of really cheap yo-yos that I bet are really good that we never hear about because they aren’t really marketed to English speaking consumers and aren’t sold on YYE.

MYY is just a bit more known than those other “random” brands so they have a niche following, but since they aren’t sold on YYE or marketed that much, they aren’t as well known/established.

People def clown on the N11. I don’t think they’re just “good for the price” either. They’re just pretty good with no qualifier needed.

Just kind of the nature of being an old yoyo in a hobby where people generally want the latest and greatest I guess. Although fret not, for I will not forget Yicheng Luo

also the n12 and myy node was decently good for its price and performance

Eh maybe you’re kinda right about the N11 ig, but I think my point still stands for the N12/Node, I feel like everyone that’s tried them thinks they’re great, it’s just a lot of ppl haven’t tried them. And the N12 is super old too

They have some in stock

The N11 is fine, but the N12 (which is a similar price) has a performance quality to it that makes the N11 look foolish.

N12 was the recommended budget metal on the r/throwers subreddit for years, for good reason.

The profile shape of the N11 is compelling though… hmmm…

i have a grudge against my n11 since it was screwed so tight I had to clamp it tight and unscrew it with pliers

Speaking of Mk1 yoyos, I haven’t heard much about the Unicorn and it pains me. That is one hell of a yoyo. Well done, @MarkD, truly.

Dune is so underrated. Looks, play, plus it’s unique. Got the whole package.

IQ is perhaps a bit boring but it plays incredible.

Miid-Y and MGB are so good. I get why they’re underrated though. Most TP’s are similar looking and easy to fly under the radar.

If we’re talking bimetals, I also love the Stormberry.

FWIW, I’m totally on the Pano/Dio train. Two of my favorite yoyos, maybe ever.

Dune is a godtier throw in my books. One of the best yoyos ever designed. Everything in that yoyo from looks to playfeel is so deliberate.
