Hello everyone.
Got myself a nice new throw a couple of days ago. Unresponsive mid-sized trow with flat shielded bearing, a little bit of nail vibe but overall a pretty smooth and quiet play.
And this morning aforementioned bearing decided to go full goblin mode all of a sudden - all noizy with a ton of vibration.
Now the question is, how could this happen? The throw is absolutely new, only a couple of hours of really light play session to test it out. And as I mentioned the bearing is a shielded one so it supposed to be clean, right?
Are there any tips and tricks to prevent this kind of stuff?
Bearings get dirty and cleaning them is just part of the yoyo experience. 100% acetone will clear it right up. Deshield on first cleaning and toss them as you can see the shields don’t prevent small particles and the bearing seat provides enough protection from larger ones.
Is it OneDrop? In that case all the 10-balls go Goblin-mode and then settle down after a day or so of use. You can either tough it out or pop them suckers off and clean with acetone/brake cleaner. You could try it with shields still on, the solvent will still seep through and it should work as well.
This happens pretty frequently. Just removing the shields and adding a couple drops of thin lube fixes it for me.
I’ve started to wonder if the noise problem isn’t bearing contamination at all, but vibrations from the shields themselves.
Nope. You have two options: play through it or lube it.
Every bearing I’ve ever had went goblin mode eventually, whether it was immediate, after a few minutes, or a few days. It is inevitable.
If the bearing is new, I wouldn’t waste my time trying to clean it with solvents. Just add a tiny bit of lube and play it.
I read on another thread once to do a couple hard mach 5’s. Put it in the mount and let it go until it spins out. it’s always worked for me
A new Yoyo can often have detritus in the bearing seat just from the manufacturing/ano process. I often have to clean bearings after just a couple hours of play. Lube doesn’t clean the bearing and often turns the bearing responsive. I clean them and run them dry it immediately solves any issues and I never have to hassle with the extra step of adding lube.
Sometimes doing Gyroscopic Flops help loosen up the bearings and gets rid of that crunch. Lube is also key for keeping them on the quite side.
Thanks a lot, everyone. To be honest I did not expect it to clog up this fast so my very first thought was “I screwed it up somehow”.
I think I’ll give it a nice acetone bath in it’s default state first and trow around a bit. And if all else fails, I’ll try to deshield it.
