Trick-a-Week 2025- #27 Underhand Tension Whip

Very important to have neutral string tension and keeping everything in plane and perpendicular to your body. This is how the slack should look before flipping the slack over your wrist:

It’s also important to rotate your wrist to have your hand facing up to catch the slack like this:

Hopefully this helps! Sorry if the pics are bad, I’m taking them with my left hand :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

The last slack gave me way more trouble than i was expecting at first but I do now agree w charlies initial assessment that once you get it, you kinda just get it and it makes sense but that initial figuring it out part can take a sec…I would much prefer something like that vs the eements that just stay hard forever lol. Imo that element is all about the setup before and especially the TH thumb action. You want to start with an L shape and then curl th index in and pinch the string there. The thumb sticking out important though and if the string is down at the tip of the thumb by the nail vs close to the webbing, it is easier to get it go around. Once you do release and turn the wrist over, make sure to follow through with the thumb and almost flick it at the end to add a bit more ooomf. If you’re landing in a heart mount and the string doesn’t go all the way around youre close. If you dont have enough string to go around, make sure hands are spread apart and that the pinch is secure in the set up before. Also you can try to use NTH thumb and pull that segment away from TH in the setup before to adjust the proportions. If you’re falling off the trapeze, yeah it happens just try to move both hands up together when you go to flick and maybe isolate the wrist turnover and try not to make that a super big movement with the arm but yeah that was happening to me a bit sometimes also. The hop up as you turn over like we can see in the POV as the slack goes around for the tower isn’t strictly necessary but does make the element a bit easier.

In general i think if you’re struggling w the last slack for the tower, just really take your time to make sure you’re happy with how the string is positioned and feels before going for the slack to make the tower. Also making sure there is some pressure on the string being held by nth thumb helps add a bit of extra ooomph.

Oh crap, did you mean the whip to tower part? Sorry, I thought you meant the set up part…

Week 27 — Underhand Tension Whip

There are a lot of variations of this kind of underhand whip out there, so it’s a good element to get some practice with, and it fits nicely with the other elements in this trick from @EOS44. Have fun!
