Trick-a-Week 2025- #20 Simian Slam

That’s a great tip for the chopsticks, thank you for the advice. I really want to learn the trick the “proper” way, so I’m going to keep practicing and hope my skill level can rise to the difficulty level of the trick.

I should have included a common mistakes section, I’ll do that for any future tutorial. I’ve gotten some good feedback on this and have seen some common mistakes that could’ve been easily addressed in the tutorial.

First thing I should emphasize though is that rebounds are not hitting the counterweight against something to redirect them. A rebound is when the counterweight wraps around something, and as you pull the wrap undone that gives the counterweight momentum in the opposite direction. So it’s not really the counterweight rebounding off your hands, it’s the counterweight wrapping around your hands and then you pull it in the opposite direction to undo the wrap. If you’re using a weirdly shaped counterweight, a grippy counterweight, or wearing clothing that the counterweight can get caught up on, that will actively interfere with rebounds since you want to be able to smoothly tug them free in a single direction.

In regard to counterweight plane management, I never even noticed that I do this, but you don’t want to keep your fingers locked parallel with the floor. I shift my hand (TH index especially during this trick) up at a 30-45 degree angle from the floor often to shift the plane of the counterweight off the plane of the yoyo. This will let the counterweight slide past the yoyo instead of bonking into it. I do this during part 1 in a very obvious manner, but during part 2 I also do this to help separate the cw and yoyo planes a bit more.

Here’s an example video showing what I’m describing:

Another common problem is being unable to get the counterweight to go around both of your hands during the first movement. When I hit the yoyo into the double on under mount, I don’t throw the counterweight, the counterweight is driven entirely by the force of the yoyo hitting into the string. If you try to toss the counterweight you’ll create slack in the string before hitting the double on undermount, and that’ll prevent you from transferring the force of the yoyo hitting the string to the counterweight. I’m just letting up on my grip on the counterweight and it essentially gets yanked out of my hand. Being able to move the counterweight purely through the force of the yoyo hitting the string is a pretty fundamental aspect of 5A imo. If you’re really struggling with this, you can try this small excercise. By just hitting the yoyo into the string from the bottom you should be able to make the counterweight come around all the way in a full arc without stalling anywhere. As an aside this is a pretty nice and fast way to start a palm down efan.

Hopefully these tips help.
