Ooo will next month be all 5a TaW? And are there any other months besides that and fixed axle feb?
If people are actually interested in participating, I’d be excited to select 5A tricks for weeks in May. Although there was basically no participation in the T-a-W thread during February for the 0A tricks, despite the Fixed Axle February thread being super popular.
And in the past during Offstring October, whenever 4A tricks are selected, it’s just Kray and I participating.
A problem with choosing alt style tricks is that most people don’t have the fundamentals to start learning intermediate/advanced tutorials in those styles. So it only makes sense that any intermediate/advanced trick tutorial is going to see no participation, when the pool of people who can participate is so low. I guess there’s always choosing another fundamentals tutorial geared towards beginners in the style. But then the issue is whether or not it’s actually worth dedicating a week to the same fundamentals video for the third/fourth year in a row, since the only people who traditionally participate in alt style weeks are the more skilled players in that style.
I’d appreciate some feedback on this even if you’re not active in the threads, if your eyes are in here on tutorials on each week, feel free to shoot me a DM if you have any comments/suggestions. Everything I’m stating here is just based on observation from past years and assumptions, I don’t know what to change if I don’t hear direct feedback
Oh and to add to this, if you ever have any tutorial you specifically want to learn, feel free to send me a DM with that tutorial and it could be used for a week. Suggestions are always welcome. I try to choose tricks that people might think are interesting, and seeing what people actually want to do. It’s easier to know what others want to see/do when I get direct feedback, because right now I’m definitely just making a lot of assumptions. I’m happy to pick a tutorial for the week if somebody tells me it’s specifically what they want to learn.
I’m all for 4A, and participated last year!
Unfortunately I came to the conclusion that I don’t have two metals in the collection I’m okay with scuffing up atm lol. If it’s too hard to learn these velvet rolls with a couple of plastics and/or I wanna progress more I’m just gonna buy a couple MagicYos on the rainforest website like Mable suggested
Hmmm hmm I will say I watched the tutorial for how to hold the cw in 5a and then just skipped ahead to goofing around hah…so I would have to catch up some with fundamentals…I will think about TaW more and get back to you…I will also do the 5a intro stuff and not get distracted just in case
Just an idea form my side would be that for the special months we do two tricks a week. One fundamental and one advanced to keep it interesting for both parties? I am really looking forward to 5A May since I just love it. I can PM you some tricks I think may be interesting for 1A, 5A and 4A the next days.
I actually like this idea a ton. That’s also just a good way to kind of work more stuff into the single month. If people start with the style at the beginning of the month and have enough fun playing it, they might be ready to go back and work on the more advanced tricks by the end of the month.
Cool happy to hear. Lets go this route then.
5a Nay and Off-tober for the win. Ive always posted tricks for these but had little growth in involvement. But I’ll never let that dture me from hoping.
Same with fixed-axel -February.
The more you appreciate and understand other styles, the better a perspective you have on you own.
Well this should be enough 1A for the week lol. Still not smooth, but much cleaner.
I keep ending with a little like mini wrist mount looking thing after the first thumb undercut.
Doesn’t happen every time but it keeps happening and I can’t tell what the heck is changed from when I get it right vs. wrong. Does this happen to anyone else or does anyone have any insights? I know I got the steps before right too because it goes to kamikazeish w the slack usually and I worked past this part but like 2 out of 5 times I end up in this super weird mount and I just can’t tell why…I can try to get a pic but it’s hard with my hands tied up in the string.
Are your fingers all facing the right direction? If your TH index or thumb are curled in a different way it might look wrong while still being the same mount.
Alternatively when you underpass with your thumb make sure the string coming from your index finger doesn’t leave the gap of the yoyo.
Thanks probably this or something similar…just happened again and I felt the snap of a rejection this time so I’m pretty sure I’m taking something extra out of the gap…mount is for sure different so I think that’s it…thank you!
Completely offtopic but I have to shoutout beatmania. To make it on topic, I would be interested in trying out other styles, I would just suggest you post a X div and 1a trick when we get into the fun months.
I thought about that, I think for May I’m going to opt for two 5A tutorials. One geared towards people new to the style, and a second tutorial for people who already know the basics of the style.
I like that this split both encourages picking up the style, and shows people tutorials they might not have seen. Since it seems like people kind of fall out of alt styles the moment they finish learning the basics.
Depending on if it seems like people are actually getting use out of the basic tutorials, I might swap it to your idea though. Of choosing a more simple 1A tutorial in addition to an intermediate/advanced alt style trick.
And yeah IIDX rules
You know it’s a harder TaW when you start thinking… “Hmmm maybe learning 3a would be easier for me this week than figuring out how to make this 1a trick look decent?”…dunno how @mable made that look so good! hah dang! I’m able to hack my way through at this point, but so far away from smooth or even acceptable to post…dead yoyo technique definitely did help w this one to figure out the tech but still very hard to execute together…gah first time I’ve been frustrated yoing in a little while…guess that’s what this thread is partially about though…pushing out of that comfort zone and all but this is hard for me lol…gonna feel good when I get it down though…
Think I got this about as far as I can this week…end parts are bad but I think I have a good idea of how long it will take for me to smooth all that out and I’d rather just leave it at this point and come back to it in a month or two…
hah excuse the hard eye roll at the end…I was tilting lol
That’s a really strong attempt tbh, that’s some good progress after a few days! Also consider that this trick was used in the 1A worlds 1st place freestyle in 2015, so this is definitely a top end trick. Especially considering it’s from the last time tech managed to edge out a victory over the meta.
Thank you! It was fun to learn and I probably will go back to it at some point…I was tilting because I couldn’t get a clean take, like each element individually I could get through so it seemed reasonable but all together was too hard right now…I think I just have to give it space but yeah clap clap for Zach because he made that look so good and you too like this trick is so hard but definitely worth the challenge and I’m stoked to push to where I did…onto velvet rolls…maybe…
