Hmm…
I feel like aesthetically pleasing yo-yo freestyles have never really been the norm of competition. There’s always been a few gems in every generation, but I don’t think it has ever been a common thing to have beautiful yo-yoing on stage. However, I think it has certainly happened less often starting after 2013 when the system became more concrete and official. At that point, more people had a focus on what they needed to do if they wanted to win.
