The most amazing experience ever!!! VA state contest.

So , today I dragged my friend with me for a two hour drive to richmond,VA. On our way to my first contest ever… i had no clue what to expect. I wasn’t going to compete, but now that I think back… I wish I would’ve just done something … anything simple just to put my self out there.

A lil history of me throwing (I started in 09 but played for a few months … then same thing in '10 … about two months, then stopped due to work/other events that happen in life… and last year '11 i have been playing since june/july consistently) So never thought about going to a contest before.

But man was I missing out on all the FUN!!!

I got there around 1030ish am … met some guys… ( I am not great with names but I think the first person I met was Gee) and two other guys just hanging out … and i was like … look at what they are doing… I was already like … wow

then I went inside the museum and there was a table setup, where I met the people organizing it … and asked am I competing? I said no, so he said cool enjoy!!! ( Alex Curfman, Samm Scott)

and then i think i saw Eric Kolowski, AJ Kirk, Daniel Dietz, … i was like wow … i think i said hey … but i was so overwhelmed … seeing like 30-40 guys all yo-yoing … i couldn’t stop looking around ( oh later on Ann Connoly, Yuuki Spencer, Joe wilson showed up… didn’t get a chance to say hello to them ) there were bunch of others… not good with names… i am sure someone who was there… might add more names.

I was confused and lost … it was a good thing though hahahha … I ran into a couple of guys from this forum … yoyoavenger, papayoyo, johnny_le1494… and a bunch of others… forgot names lol

but anyways back to the main topic …

As i sat there and watched the sports ladder … and then X division ( combination of 2a,3a,4a,5a) and then 1a … I couldn’t have been any happier … i think … even throwing couldn’t have made me happier ( which i was doing as well, also learning from others… trading and buying … yoyojoe was there selling a lot of stuff for a great price, also TenYoYo was there with demos and selling) … i wish they had this going on more often … it was just amazing put simply … words can’t describe how amazing it was to watch all of this great talent in our community.

I feel lucky to have been there and I wish I could have stayed longer to see the finals!!! ( unfortunately i had to leave early :frowning: )

After all of this said and done , I have to say that if there is a contest close to you … you should definitely make the effort to go out there. It will the most fun you will ever have throwing … unless you go to worlds … which I might try to do this year.

Anyways … just wanted to share this with everyone and get more people to go out there and compete ( don’t be like me :stuck_out_tongue: )

Wish I would have taken my camera to take pics, but I was having so much fun that I probably wouldn’t have had time to take pics… but A lot of people took pics, hope someone posts something.

Oh and last but not least… Thanks!!! Everyone who organized this event and to all of the throwers who competed and put up an amazing show… Had a blast!!!

I was there! I was the guy you almost traded your P2 to.

Thanks for sharing this, Nivo. After reading this, I’m definitely going to try to attend the competitions out here in California.

Hey… Yea I remember that… I’ll let u know next time we do a meet out in northern VA… N let me kno if u ever change ur mind

Nice, go for it!!.. Wish I could go to one every weekend lol

Did you meet Yuuki Spencer? He’s a chill guy.

Yea, everyone was chill!!! I saw his prelims…Wish more people out in the real world were more like yoyoers, the world would be a better place lol … And I think Yuuki Spencer ended up winning.

If he competed he won.

Worlds is probably what you saw times 10. It is amazing people yoyo’ing 24/7. Hope to see you there!

I hope I can make it…

And Icthus… Yea he definitely won!

Nivo: It’s Evan btw.

And thanks to all who showed up. It couldn’t have been a better day!

Reading this makes me look forward to May this year, when the Bay Area Classic comes around again. Hopefully, they’ll keep it at Washington Square park, a nice easy place to get to. While at the BAC, I met Brandon Jackson, bought a yoyo from RecRev’s Alex Kim, and saw Andre Boulay when they announced his presence, followed by seeing him later afterwards.

I have no intentions on competing but it is certainly fun to watch, and just to be around other yoyoers, expand my collection, and just enjoy the day outside of these 4 walls and/or electronics.

This reminded me of MY first contest. Indy States 2007. Awesome.

You HAVE to go to Worlds. It’s incredible. I went to Worlds as my first contest, and then I went to a State contest and was kind of let down because I expected them to be the same. So you’re on the other end of the spectrum, (although VA states is a little more popular than NER I think.), go to Worlds, it’s 3 day’s of yoyo heaven.

Worlds 2012 baby!

I was there but I wasn’t sure who you were. I didn’t stay the whole time cause I went to a gun ghow but apparantly I missed out cause I didnt see yukki or kolowski. Oh well

I was there too, remember i got the superstar. So fun!

It was awesome. Yuuki had an amazing performance outside when he was hanging out with everyone

yeah i remember that trade … it was hilarious … you came up to me asking what you should get … and then Johnny came up to me later saying … ill sell you this superstar and i was like … yeah i know exactly who you should talk to lol

darn i missed that … btw you guys have any pics? if you do you should upload them here  … i wish i took pics… i think my friend took a video of me talking to all of you guys on his iPhone … its crappy but i might just put it up, he had a blast too … and he doesn’t even throw … i think his jaw dropped a bunch of times …
