String Makers Discussion

I don’t tie a knot I just string them up like I normally would

We should make a thread for sharing pics of our string and the cool color combos I know I would enjoy sharing my art

I think THIS thread is just the place.
Post away but PLEASE keep it organized.
Or post it externally and simply link from here.

Who here still uses the pen method to spin strings?

Hey can anybody give any tips on how to make my strings last longer? All my strings seem to play decently for about an hour and then they hold no tension. Any tips?

You have to find a thread type that will give you “counter tension”. So that your string will naturally try unwind, so that as it gains tension in throwing it will work against the counter tension keeping it neutral

What weights of thread are you using?
Serger? Whats the tex rating?
How many threads per string?

/p

I use a lot of 40, 50, and 60 weight threads.

On a side note, if anybody would like some 4"x4" bags to sell their strings in, I am selling them in packs of 100

how much

After hours of testing different strings I finally came up with one that last forever holds tension well and whips good  but today I just started using serger thread and I also use trilobal I’m not sure of the weight. But I make Type 7 and 6. The trilobal is 40 wt and the serger idk.Oh and what does the weight affect?

Thread weight will affect your final tension.

Try making a single string of all the same weight thread and then one with at least 3 different weights.

Use the exact same method for each string.

Then see the difference in feel, overall weight, whips and longevity.

ok I’m going to try this when I get home  I’m guessing you want them to all be the same weight? Or is it the other way around?

STEPS:

  1. Use the EXACT same method.
  2. Vary the thread weights.
  3. Vary the string types.
  4. See the end result.
  5. Learn.

Ok

Ive made a couple and figured out that it’s good to add heavier weights to lower weights so it holds tension better. Now got to try Serger an Rayon  Does anybody else here use Rayon? I just love the soapy feel it had to it!

$9 a pack, thats only 9 cents per bag

Hey guys, so I have found that it is too much work to make all my strings by hand so I have decided to make a auto string rig. I have the motors down and all but I need help with the folding. I was thinking that I could just attach them to swivels and then fold it over. And they would just do there thing. could anyone see this not working?

Not sure I see it exactly, but if my guess is correct, I see a potential issue. Best to try the method with one and see if there are any issues before scaling up to multiples.

i have an idea. Maybe put some nails at the folding point then put swivels on each bent nail so when you fold them it will automatically spin them selves. But then again that probably wouldn’t work

You wouldn’t be able to twist the string
