I have a problem, I made a lot of strings, and they’re so pretty I don’t want to use them.
Tough decision to make:
-order yye string… the poly is so cheap it’s hard to resist
-go buy more materials of different colors … make a rig … and spend the time to make them
I understand why people buy strings now… cost… after you make a multi string rig and buy materials and factor in the time to make them… ordering a couple packs of 50 yye poly strings is kind of tempting.
then again the material I buy is probably better than what the foreign factory’s use to make their strings… so there is quality to consider also…
If bulk poly does the trick for you, winding your own may not be the answer! I think people wind their own for personal satisfaction (colour selection, customized characteristics, scratch the DIY itch), or to sell. If you don’t find it satisfying AND you’re not selling it, hey… Kitty string works for heaps of people.
Yup, exactly.
It’s also very time-consuming.
Regardless of the rig design and materials used, time is the 2nd largest loss factor in string making.

take one of each color or something like that…AND FRAME 'EM! just for fun(and it’s a cool way do document your progress)!
Did half and half… Purchased strings and went to get some more thread ;D
It’s the thin edge of the wedge man!

I love when you finally create that one string after literally hours of trying. Such a satisfying feeling
I found a potential new G-String format last night.
Triple material mix of poly, cotton AND nylon.
Not overly thick, still smooth on the fingers with suicide loops that an elephant can wander through at their own pace. Mild internal bounce with no THUNK at the end of your throw. I love whips, slacks and especially suicides, so it’s super fun for me.
More testing needed as I’ve only made about 20 so far, with each a bit different in terms of material ratios.
It was a real challenge to find a cotton that wouldn’t fight with the nylon I was using. I went through 6 different cotton weights before they ‘clicked’. Poly tends to play nice with both cotton and nylon…most of the time.
My hope is to then find all these materials in the COLOURS I want. That’s always a challenge.
I’ll keep you all posted.

Awesome. Not sure if you caught in another recent thread, but I finally caught on to the awesomeness of the SOLO format. Looking forward to seeing if this new format pans out, too!
Well I have dialed it in and it plays stellar. I will likely never release it for public purchase though as the material costs are simply too high. I would never ask anyone to pay 7-10$ for 5 strings regardless of the extraordinary features that string may possess. I personally would never pay that much for yoyo string and neither should you.
I will make some of this for myself to use and maybe pass some around for funsies at club meets.
Here endeth this chapter.

But… but… I don’t go to your club!
You could always open source the recipe. Haha!
yes you should
And can any body post characteristics of types of thread for string making ? It would help a lot
Thank you
How do my strings look?
All the way to the right is 100% Polly
2nd row is 50/50 Polly Nylon
3rd row is Polly Mix
All the way to the left is Rayon/Nylon Blend my favorite Now I have to make some of my cotton Polly Blend and I will be done for the day :o
They look great! Confused about the top/bottom, though… they go mostly left/right at a slight diagonal. iPhone?
ya sorry i took it on my iphone and for some reason the computer angles it but the ones farthest left are the Rayon/Nylon one after that is Polly Mix then 50/50 Polly Nylon and then Polly. After I set up my rig and figure out some packaging they will be up for sale!
It’s actually the iPhone that fails to save the image in the correct orientation for other phones/computers to see. Blame Apple.

haha okay
When making multicoloured strings what is the type of knot that you use to tie the different coloured thread together?

Is there a way you can do it without a knot?
