Sickburn Yo-Yo Workshop Ultem Fixie

Same. My dad is a retired machinist, I’m tempted to share with him for his thoughts, but I don’t wanna give the old man an aneurysm

I have heard that many machining/turning problems are related to workholding.

Well I told them I had wanted to return them and get a refund to purchase from my new shop Rapid Direct. They ignored that request and emailed an update apologizing for the problem and telling me no need to return them and they already started remaking all 100.

I have some concerns that I’m just going to get another box of junk considering they were either dishonest or incompetent but :woman_shrugging:

If they really do let me keep them I’ll give everyone a free trash grade to abuse when they buy one. That way you can hit one with a your car or try to blow it up with firecrackers or something silly.

I’m game for trash grades!!!

Yep, and it’s obvious they also had trouble re-indexing after flipping.

That’s one of the reasons unit prices drop precipitously for large quantities. Making the jigs to properly hold and index things can easily make up more than half the work for turning a couple dozen of something, but makes up a tiny fraction of the work for turning a few thousand things. And lots of shops try to cut corners on the jigs for “smaller” runs of things for that very reason.

My dad had a couple of mills in the garage when I was a kid that were used for making custom archery equipment. The time to make the jigs to hold and index the work pieces was about 100X the time to actually machine a single riser for a bow. And also used about 10X the materials compared to a single riser.

Im very sceptical of this shop now… did they say they figured out what they did wrong? Otherwise yeah its just a repeat!

I asked them if they are positive they can accurately remake the parts and said I was concerned I would get another box of trash. We will see what they say.

They also responded today and argued that the No Jive axles are bead blasted even though they are quite smooth and look nothing like every blasted Ultem item I’ve handled. They want me to take a bunch of pictures, and possibly send them to their lab for inspection. So another headache.

Meanwhile, at the lab…

After no luck with finding someone willing to blast these axles locally I ordered some of the green pyramids like one drop uses to tumble their stuff and I’m going to tumble the No Jive axles myself. Just a single axle to test it first.

The experiments continue, this is exciting, good luck!

So you’re going to “fix” the axle?

(see what I did there?)

Thanks! They actually refunded me the cost of the tumbling pyramid media lol so that’s something at least.

so im curious, what will you use for the actual tumbling? like a rock tumbler?

I’ve used rotary tumblers (rock tumbler style) for stuff before and they didn’t work great for anything yo-yo related I threw at them. I now have a vibratory tumbler that’s been working well when I used it for some experiments.

Okay I finished stonewashing the NJ axles but they are super dirty and need cleaned. It helped a little with response. While it does depend on your No Jive and string I would say these almost exclusively play better with a double loop.
