Wait til you start throwing aluminum tops with metal tips!
I would ask for the magic boomerang string but I think Iāve got the boomerang down.
What is this top?
I think I need to learn to get the top on my thumb.
So, this evening I finally had time to try out a spin top for the first time (bought a Short Circuit last week). It was so fun! I feel like Iām a super slow learner with yoyo, and was expecting a spin top to be a struggle. But, much to my surprise, I was able to land it upright on a plate pretty consistently after only a handful of throws. I then tried boomerang, and to my shock landed it first try. I spent about an hour just throwing boomerangs and then tossing it from hand to hand.
Then I took a break to do pool maintenance and some other chores, and when I got back to throwing the top, I couldnāt land boomerang for anything. First, it just bounced off my palm. Then, it came back at me sideways instead of standing upright. Felt like every throw was worse than the last for a bit. But, I stuck with it, and eventually got back to where I was landing them in my palm consistently.
So, whatās next? Is there a beginners trick ladder somewhere with good tutorials? Iām guessing that much like yoyo, the learning curve is about to get really steep.
The reaction to her catching it is hilarious! Love it
The spintricks ladder is pretty straightforward I think.
That is a Spintastics Quicksilver Hybrid fixed tip, great top.
@MinerJ , that is great progress! The experience of having a session where you canāt seem to do anything right is something that still happens to me sometimesš¤£
This is a list of YouTube channels that have tutorials from basic to advanced (in no order.)
As you have figured out by now, the length of the string (actually how far you wind a piece of string up the side of the top) determines how far the top will flip over from tip up to tip down. Too short a wind, the top will come back tilted towards your body when you catch, too long , pointed away.
The string is not a big factor if all you do is throw spinners or boomerangs, but it makes a big difference if the string is too thin or too fat or too course or loosely twisted, once you start doing tricks where the tip is sliding or grinding on the string. The magic boomerang string isnāt actually magic, it is just a nicer piece of string than the stock string that comes with the top, that I marked the proper length on for the YYF top for @kretzschmar .
Donāt let him lie to you, itās magic lol
Edit: I donāt know why, but most of these strings I have, I have to shorten and get the length just right or I just absolutely suck
Thatās awesome bro⦠and your daughterās reaction is priceless.
I have still never landed a Boomerang. Iāve been at it for a year and a half but admit that I havenāt tried a whole lot in that time. I get exhausted very quick and this seems to really wear my out quickly. Anyways, mostly I canāt get the thing to come back towards me very often. Every throw seems to offer wildly varying outcomes and I can never tell whatās causing what. Though I have still been happy doing Skyrocket into my hand.
@kretzschmar , thatās probably an indication you are consistently tilting your wrist when you throw. Not really a problem if you are consistent.
@Slestak75 , that wild boomerang experience might be because of a loose wind when you wind the string on the top. Just a guess.
So Iāve been learning but the finger ring/disc that came with mine just flies out if my hand, do you all have a recommendation on a better one than this ovular one with slots in it? The ring that goes on the top of the top is fine, itās just the one that goes between my fingers. Itās way too floppy and slick lol
Itās probably your throw and release thatās making the button slide off. Releasing the top to early results in this happening or throwing too hard.
As a beginner itās easier to throw with less power and focus on the release of the top
I want to replace it with brass knuckles and see the results. I am positive this is a bad idea, and I am not recommending it, but I am genuinely curious if this in conjunction with a wrist brace would be a cheat code for learning
This looks perfect, thank you!
Iāve seen the Cobra mentioned several times in this thread, and they are really cheap, so I just ordered a 4 pack of different size Cobras. Excited to see how different tops play compared to each other.
That one is possibly my favorite button. Maybe the one that comes with a Star or Cobra. Because itās the lightest. Like Sergio said, donāt throw it hard. Focus on keeping your hand closed.
You can put the button on the inside and a wrap around your finger and back out to the inside, or you can leave it on the back side of your fingers and do a wrap.
I have not been doing this, I need to try this, thank you
