I think I finally have an answer for why the original prototypes were so much stronger than the production models of the Caramels.
The original prototypes, like the very first ones, were made with Swiss Lathes. The difference between Swiss Lathes and traditional CNC lathes is complicated to explain here but the short version is that they hold and support the work very differently, leading to a lot less vibration and less aggressive cutting leading to less internal stress on what is being cut.
Will find out soon enough if that theory holds up…
I’ve been out of the loop and just catching up on this thread. So much cool stuff happening here.
I just ordered the Demons Fun, and not gonna lie, I’m really looking forward to trying out the trash grade Caramel. Those Caramels were calling my name from day 1! Total bummer they had so many issues in manufacturing…
It’s been a real journey. I’m looping back to the original shop that did the first prototypes and am having them make some bearing version protos to see how they hold up. That’ll tell me if the Swiss Machining is truly what made them so tough.
