Re-tapping a yoyo help

Hi, i recently stripped a yoyo and i’m thinking of using that as a learning opportunity to rethread the yoyo.

the yoyo i’m trying to rethread is a YYR diffusion, which uses a M4*10 axel, the yoyo is stripped on both sides. Will tapping it into a M5 work or will i need to tap it to M6?

I have all the tools i need, new axles included, i just want to figure out if directly tapping to M5 will do the trick. Any advise or information would be helpful, thank you!

Better to drill with a 4.2mm drill first and then rethread with M5. I’m assuming you have access to a lathe. Might be a bit difficult to drill it dead center on a drill press

sadly no i don’t have access to one, i’m assuming the drill is to smooth out the surfaces before threading?

Indeed, it is doable on a drill press though I’m sure someone with more experience can give some useful info on what to watch out for.

I call upon @yoyospirit

I’ve heard he has experience with this

Depends how bad the stripped side is. If it’s minor a bit of purple loctite will help if it’s worse blue or even you don’t mind essentially gluing that sides axis in red.

If it’s completely missing thread you could go the helicoil route.

Once you get into drilling both sides to increase the axle size your in the vibe is going to be present zone. It won’t be terrible if it’s a straight through hole but it’s very hard to completely make it feel like new on that path.

Posting pictures can help too just for reference of how bad the damage is specifically if the threads

You can tap it to a M5 axle size, M6 is too large. The diameter for a M6 axle would be larger than the inside diameter of a C bearing.

C size bearing hole is 6.35 mm, m6 axle should be around 5.9 mm.

That being said it wouldn’t work as the bearing seat would be to weak and break off.

the issue is that both sides are mildly stripped, so my idea was to rethread both sides and use an m5 inside it, hoping it would possibly make it work.

a little bit of vibe isn’t an issue for me, it’s a simple diffusion after all. I just want to experiment and try to see if it’s possible with as little tools as I have on hand. namely a drill, m5 axles and a thread tapper.

I’ve already tried the loctite, it works but because the axle is considerably short once it’s glued in to one side, it’s causing the unglued side to strip more which is causing the concern for me.

Hmm if you’re getting a short axle you could easily buy a longer one. I’m to the point my parts drawer has various m3,4,5 set screws if all kinds of lengths
