Raspberry pi

Anyone know anything about a raspberry pi? I just got one for free but don’t know much about them or what I can do with one

You can do a lot with them. I’ve used a pi4 to monitor and control a 3D printer.

Think of it like a micro computer. The possibilities are semi limitless.

Interesting, I think this is the first one? I’m gonna probably mess with it once I figure out how to start messing with it lol

What would you like to know?

This is my pi5 which I mainly use for random GPIO projects. These are great for anything from robots to mini servers etc

How should I go about firing this thing up? lol. I’ve never even seen one in person, obviously I plug it into a power supply after that I have no idea, there’s an hdmi port I see I’m assuming that’s for output to a monitor? Is there a chance this could already be set up to do something? Sorry if these are stupid questions I just don’t know anything at all about these

Gen 1 is off the USB-micro port you have on there. Otherwise hook up a keyboard, mouse and a make sure there is some type of OS on it via the micro sd. Monitor into HDMI.

If you have an SD card in there already its best practice to toss it as you do not know what could be on there and what it does. If this was given to you buy a friend or institute likely safe.

I dont think gen 1’s hold much relevancy these days as project computers but I could be wrong, lowest gen i’ve seen commonly in use was RPi 2 but mainly RPi3

Oh ok gotcha it makes sense now, thank you! Literally just a mini computer. I’ll have to find one of my SD cards as I didn’t get one with it. What kind of operating systems can these run?

Check the site, they use linux, however just get whatever Pi OS works for your rp1 assuming it still has support. You might need to do some digging

Awesome thank you very much, I appreciate the help

They are micro computers.

I have built a handheld RetroPi Game emulator with the RasberryPi0.

I aslo did a Emulator/Media Streaming version on the RaspberryPi3.

Visit https://raspberrypi.com for a wealth of information. Once you have the operating system up and running the help icon on the desktop will take you to hundreds of books and magazine that the Raspberry Pi Foundation produces. You can also download free pdfs of all of them.

I have using an RPi since the earliest models circa 2012. I actually use an RPi 5 as a desktop computer. They are that capable.

Let me know if you have any questions.

PS. It is THE BEST learning and development system you can find.

I have several, but currently only have one in use as a Plex server to stream movies and TV shows to a Roku.
