So I’ve been throwing this idea around a few places, but here’s the brain dump.
I have an idea for a structure to make it attainable: either you want a player card and you get a mix of random cards and your own, or you want a full set and aren’t interested in having a card for yourself, or a combo of both.
I would probably run it through the DMV Throwers Yo-Yo Club, as I have it set up with its own tax ID and such.
I think pricing would put the buy-in between $15-30 per person if I get at least 20 people, but I’ll have to gauge interest, set up a signup, and run the numbers.
I was also going to reach out to YYE and/or YYS and a few others to see if they want to sponsor the effort, putting their logo on every card and helping by subsidizing the buy-in.
Art-wise, I’m not sure if a TCG (think Magic: The Gathering) or more traditional baseball card style would fit better. The YYE cards were very baseball-card stats and action-shot stylized, but I could also envision a play-style type, special move/effect, with the player’s favorite yo-yo/trick and a short description, more in the format of a Pokémon/Yu-Gi-Oh!/Magic playing card, with the sponsor logo and some art on the back of the cards, and the logo/art changing if we do another round later on, signifying the edition.
Either style works, but with the baseball style, it works better for competitive competitors, while the TCG style is a bit more playful and less about player stats.
I could get really silly and set up some randomizers for a foil selection, so a few lucky player cards are holographic (I would eat the cost on that).
I’ve tossed around the above idea to a few folks and in a few corners of the community I know yye had cards that are still popular and some individuals have player cards they have made for themselves, and a few clubs have done this so far for their folks, but my goal would be to make this community wide.
What I need from y’all at this point is what style of player card: baseball card style or TCG (think Magic: The Gathering) styling or something else.
- Baseball / Sports style player card
- TCG (MtG/Pokemon/etc) style player card
- Other comment about what you’re thinking
Once I have that info, maybe in a few months, I’ll be able to get some logistics rolling. I’ll note to keep myself from being overburdened; the first batch would have a minimum/maximum (I’ll figure that out later) so it’s worth my time but also not a massive task for just myself.
I thrive on group think so feel free to give me your thoughts and ideas and such.
