PIF - Sickburn Ultem Yo-Yo

That’s that we don’t want this work but will do it if your willing to pay a stupid price quote

I yearn for a lathe…

Once I finally get one, I’ll take it all on lol

Between this hobby and watch/ clock repair, as well as my full time automotive repair job, it would be super handy…

I think this will be my new goal, acquire lathe by Christmas, attempt to make all my YoYo friends (you guys) some kind of throw for Christmas/ holidays/ FAF (or at least mod some Whips like the one I gave to @SidequestMarlon but cleaner)

I’ve been wanting a laser engraver/cutter so I can make cool ■■■■. One of these days.

I spent 2 grand on a laser cutter / engraver in May and was sent only the air filter. Everything else is “back ordered” according to the vendor. Every 2 weeks they push the date back another 2 weeks. It’s in stock with the manufacturer directly and Amazon despite the supposed back order. I can’t cancel the order because they sent me the filter which I unpacked and tossed the packaging for. I’m nearly to the point of reporting fraud to my cc but it’s from a well respected and reputable vendor so I don’t know what’s going on.

Okay I can order a hundred or so blanks from a different machinist for pretty reasonable. Want to gauge folks interest in the first order and which material would be of the most interest.

What yoyos would that go in, just the rbc, plasm and lemon?

Which is tougher, I’ve abused too many blanks and don’t wanna do it again lol

I love the feel of PEEK. Strong polymer and very smooth

I’m not sure if standard width mr85 would fit in the lemon. I need to try though.

Yoyo models off the top of my head.

Harbinger

Plasm

RBC

Origen

Druid

Also maker made ones like the waffle stomper and honeycomb. I’m probably forgetting some.

Teflon has lower friction and higher heat resistance and is resistant up to 1500 psi minimum so would theoretically be fine. The low friction could make for interesting behavior with a blank.

Let me price that out and see if it is doable and I’ll add it to the poll if so.

Edit. PEEK is about 50% higher cost vs Ultem.

I tried to edit the poll to add stuff but it’s too late so I’m gonna add a second poll in case folks would prefer to consider different sized blanks than mr85.

Lemon posts would end up with a stuck bearing if you made it a 2mm blank. It’ll “fit” but may never come off

A or mr85 are my vote for first shot but c and d eventually as well. Essentially I want em all but will settle for any while preferring smaller ones first as I have access to c and d blanks from zgrt already.

Both but teflon seems very cool to me

I am wholly uneducated on responsive stuff. I like having one single responsive slimline which I like the deep state for, will get this ultem one to have a plastic option.

I wanted to know what the different materials for blanks achieve? I get lower friction teflon would let the yoyo spin more but how much does it interfere with response?

I genuinely don’t know how it would affect response. Basically I would buy a batch and if they were good I would offer them up or get them stocked at YYE and if they messed the response up I would eat the cost and toss them. Science.

I think either material would be great but might choose the property of low friction above all.

Yeah there is an interesting relationship between axle smoothness and response in fixed axle. Too smooth of an axle can ruin response. But since these are meant to go into yo-yos with response pads I don’t think they would introduce the smooth axle problem like let’s say a solid teflon fixie would. I’m terribly intrigued by the idea of a Teflon blank.

Yeah that’s my only mild concern is response slippage but seeing as blanks would be used in bearing YoYo’s anyway it should be significantly less of an issue.

I do wonder what hardness the teflon would be
