Papercut Issues

So, I’ve had it for about a week and I’m exeriencing issues with what I’m hoping are just the response pads; they’re WAY too slippy for my liking. Even Kitty Fat has trouble binding and I fumble easy tricks and bunds that I’ll nail on all my other throws with zero issue, next try etc. I find it catching axle knots a lot as well. The only variable I can figure is the response pads are just slimmer, and I’m not used to that/should replace them for my preference, etc.?

Other than this is throws and balances great just will not bind nearly as easily (requires quite the effort compared to my other throws), and is super prone to axle knots, something which barely happens anymore on any of my other throws.

I can barely get a flow throwing before it snags, refuses to bind, knots, etc.

Thoughts?

Are they the Pink or Clear? YYFrs pads are known to be slippery especially the clear ones. Didn’t an extra set come in the box?

Correct pink/clear! They did come with an extra set! I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just me.

The Pink ones are softer, have had decent play experiences with those

I feel like slippy and snaggy are opposites usually and I’m not sure how it can be both. I would just swap the response pads if you don’t like the response.

All the yoyofriends pads for me are too snaggy, I have your opposite issues all the pads from them I try are very grabby that drive me insane, is keep snagging during combos and I have always to silicone to make it as slippy as possible.

What you can do is use “soft pads” like the teal and blue from YYfactory or if you want to go extreme (but at that point just play modern responsive) the green ones.

Another good solution can be using the flowable silicone from Permatex the transparent one (not the grey at all or you risk even slippier pads), the transparent is quite famous they sell it also on YYE shop.

Have you tried also thicker strings? Just in case you have them maybe some OT strings fat are thicker than the Kitty or Project 44.

I think all those yoyos like papercut, kagerou and similar are kind of “slippy” friendly, they really require a solid bind to come back and are done for all those modern tricks that require some string around the bearing, I am absolutely not offending your technique at all at the end of the day are just preferences, you can overcome it pretty sure with the transparent silicone or the YYF pads

The pink ones work perfect for me

Trust me it’s both somehow, I know it sounds contradictory. It slips 90% of the time, but when it binds, it over binds and eats more string real fast then axle knots. It’s both extremes hence the annoyance with an $83 throw!

Great ideas thank you for taking the time to make this post! I have Kitty Fat but I’m not of the mindset of having certain strings for certain yo-yo’s as a workaround; they should all generally be able to respond relatively similarly IMHO and this is the first time I’ve ever had this issue across the two dozen plus metals, bi-metals, and plastics I own!

I might just need better response pads.

Consider yourself lucky! Mine are like bad brakes that won’t catch, and when they do, it eats the string like a responsive yo-yo thrown and called at full blast, making an axle knot over half the time.

I think I just need new/different pads.

oh i totally understand this, it happens with fox tails and takeshi string for me. it’s probably both string and pad-dependent, i’d change them to some reliable bulk pads like hollywood modern or yyf and see what happens

I alternate between Kitty Fat and Brandon Vu bulk string, both have yet to fail me! Thank you so much for the input, this community is invaluable.

I think it’s time to consider expanding that mindset. One of the great things about Yoyo is the sheer variety of options that are available in strings, bearings, throws! All of it. I’m of the mindset that one should try as many different strings as possible, Once u start expanding your horizon you’ll quickly realize not all strings are created equal. Same goes double for throws! I think every thrower with more than a handful of throws should have at least 3 different string types on hand for situations just like yours. This is where having something like a c3 pro string (yellow/pink mix) or Slackies even would come in handy.

I’m willing to be open to trying out different strings. Perhaps it is time that I’ve finally accumulated enough throws from a variety of companies, that I’m just now experiencing this for the first time. Thank you so much.

On this I have a different phylosophy and point of view.

Once I found my favourite strings, pads and bearings that’s it, I stopped looking around and also in yoyos I have 2/3 that are my daily rotation and the rest is a distraction for “every now and then”.

I consider myself a “pure player”, I do not care much about try so many stuff, I care about tricks and tricks only.

I discover that for my play: Sochi - Phoenix or Zipline - Alphaline (the ones available easier for me in the moment), Ds Bearings, Permatex grey silicone are the best I can have and wish, so all my yoyos (or at least my main players) are setup in that single way, every single time.

Sometimes if I get a new yoyo and I play it stock it doesn’t even convince me much, once I setup with all the equipment I like, the yoyo has a new life.

It makes sense to try a bit but once you find something you really like than it’s also ok to stop without keep looking for a Graal that usually does not exist.

Yoyos have different behaviour as they have different shapes, sizes and specs but I noticed strings, bearings and pads are for me a constant, I like to know how the string react, I like to know how long a string last, which one is the sweet spot, have a reliable bearing that it doesn’t get jammed and also a response system that is very slippy and reliable, I know 100% I not gonna get a snag during a combo.

As said are points of view, all valuable but I can understand why @Jace wants to use what he already has and what always work

I’ve used aceyo bulk and vine phat and have had pretty consistent binds with the Papercut. Snaggy at first for me. I find yoyofriends pads to be really snaggy at first especially on the Peregrine.

I been thinking of getting some OT fat but have been a little nervous with all the yoyofriends throws I have it may be too snaggy for them.

This works with modern yoyos that all have similar gap widths and weight.

Great reply, I appreciate the thorough depth of analysis. I’m the same way. I’m not close-minded, but I just know what I like when I get there and I strive for consistency, so there’s the minimal distance/variables between me landing tricks as possible, etc.

I was thrown off because at the price range I wasn’t expecting that discrepancy!

There’s an in between here. You can have a baseline string that you mainly use but also find one thicker or thinner string (or both) that you like and use that one when it’s more appropriate for a specific yoyo. Then you’re still only buying the same couple of strings and you have that consistency.

Plenty of strings come in multiple thicknesses so you could buy a bulk pack of your baseline and then a small pack in a different thickness for this scenario.
