First and only yoyo I had until yesterday was a OneDrop Markmont Next. Played with it a lot when I received it. Lost it, found it again after moving. Got back into yoyo with COVID and work from home… And now after getting some advice from this forum, I’ve received the big guy: CLYW Akita!
Wanted to try something “modern” and on the wide side. Definitely not disappointed!
So first of all thank you for all the great advice (@TheThrowingGnome@ChrisFrancz@CPC …).
As said above the only comparison I can make is with the OD Markmont Next, which is if I’m correct an “undersized” yoyo by today’s standard.
The Akita feels… (pros):
Powerful (very long spin times)
Extremely forgiving & stable
Light / floaty
But strangely seems (cons):
More toy-like (even if is the finishes are impeccables)
Less agile
Overall very satisfied because it feels I have 2 very different yoyos to reach for. Hopefully not the start of an addiction…
There are tons and tons of yoyos out there. You have missed a lot of releases on these years, it is probably good time to make some research, some purchases and trades Ten years is like a geologial epoch or two in history of yoyo making.
Talk about different ends of the spectrum. Welcome back to being active with yoyo, enjoy your yoyos, don’t feel pressure to go on a buying spree, enjoy however you like.
I think it’s down to weight / weight repartition. The OD Markmont Next is heavier but smaller than the Akita. So it feels “sturdy” and you feel it on the string.
The Akita by comparison seems very floaty and light on the string.
Akita: 64.5gr for a 55mm diameter
OD Markmont Next: 67gr for a 50mm diameter
I think you’ve got 2 of the best yoyos ever made in their size categories. You’re going to be hard pressed to find anything that’s significantly better.
