MYY K2 problem

Got a MYY K2. Put in the unresponsive bearing.

After about 10 minutes of really great play, 2 things happened:

  • when spinning, it started to make a sound that I can best describe as a ‘squeaky sounding rattle’ (also a bit like a high-speed wind, haha). The sound is consistently there - it doesn’t go in and out, except for a split-second here and there.

  • the yoyo (using the unresponsive bearing) is now quite responsive.

Sounds bearing related…but I’ve tried a couple of other concave C bearings…though they didn’t seem to lock into place as the MYY bearing kind of did. No change.

If I take the halves apart and spin the axel with my fingertip, it stops immediately (didn’t test this before the problem, though).

Sounds like something is loose, but everything looks/feels solid. Hope someone can help with where to look. Pity, as those first 10 minutes were great!

TIA!

Something very tiny probably got in the bearing and jammed up the balls in the cage, like a string fiber. I’ve looked at them under my microscope and there is all kinds of stuff that gets imbedded. Look up bearing cleaning tutorials, see if a bearing service helps!

Thanks! I really didn’t think it could be a lube issue - trying 2 other bearings - but lubed the bearing anyway, and that took care of the sound. It is still more responsive than before, but definitely better. Tomorrow I’ll examine the bearing for debris when the light is better. Hopefully, things iron themselves out.

Thanks again!

also just be aware that in yoyos that you move back and forth between responsive and unresponsive, you will have lube transfer from the responsive bearing to the bearing seat on the yoyo and then in turn it will get into the unresponsive bearing. if the unresponsive bearing begins going responsive very soon after cleaning it and putting it back in, consider taking a qtip and rubbing alcohol and clean the bearing seat

Ah, thank you, I will definitely check into that!

Definitely keep some compressed air duster lying around, id soak the bearing in isopropyl alcohol 91% then spray it with the duster up to speed in both directions.

If you do plan on lubing it I would only use trumpet valve oil for the lightest weight oil possible that will not reduce your bearing spin time. Spray it up to speed with the duster again.

You will notice when completely clean they will spin for a decent amount of time, and you can achieve better with just the right amount of lightweight oil.

Once you take care of the bearings if the issue is still going try replacing the pads.

I have a K2. Its okay. It can snag a bit but for a toy grade yoyo its pretty fun. Good for learning basic stuff and finger spins.

Expect snags, but going responsive is usually a bearing needing cleaning or a but if thin lube. The pads are usually more of a snaggy issue.

I cant remember if I personally changed the pads on the K2 but i do have spare pads ready to swap out from yoyos that arent playing optimally.

Problem solved (at least for now, haha).

Had tried 2 other bearings - one was older, but had been given the full lighter fluid treatment/tiny bit of lube. None would spin on their own after a finger flick. The other 2 didn’t seem to quite fit onto the seat the same as the OG.

Just grabbed a bearing out of a MYY Shark Honor and I’m back in business.

Thanks for all the replies, they were great info & reminders (getting a compressed air can to have on hand, for example).
