i know there are some guides here on the forums already but would you mind sharing your specific process for polishing ? this thing looks so clean !

Lots of patience and the right tools haha, but it’s not too bad & thank you! It honestly turned out way better than I thought it would.

In a nutshell:

  1. I stripped the ano with rust remover containing diluted hydrofluoric acid
  2. Put yoyo on the drill and sanded from 1000 grit up to 2000 incrementally ensuring I got all micro scratches and imperfections out
  3. Polish on drill with good aluminum polish

I got in the tight spots by folding the sandpaper when sanding and polishing with q-tips. Appropriate pressure and drill speed are imperative for good results on a mirror polish.

It was beat and already had a bit of fingernail vibe, so it still has that bit but it didn’t get any worse at all.

Can’t you remove the ano with sodium hydroxide? Why would you choose to work with HF over sodium hydroxide?

You can use either. Diluted HF is just what I had on hand, since it is the main ingredient in rust remover. It works great for stripping ano.

Lye (sodium hydroxide) and diluted HF (rust remover) are two of the best/fastest ways to strip ano.

Just be careful not to leave it in too long as it can pit aluminum quite fast.

I normally use “Greased Lighting”, ive found it to be less abrasive to the metal then more heavier solutions

What kind of hobbies are you into where you have HF ‘on hand’ :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

Gotta be super careful with that HF. It’s probably one of the most dangerous chemicals I’ve ever worked with in my labs.

It’s the main ingredient in rust remover which you can get at any grocery store. It’s diluted and works well for stripping ano.

Ended up further refining with 3000 grit (highly recommend going to 3000 for best results). Threw in an NSK concave and RSO landing pads, this thing is an absolute TREAT.
