MB's Powder Thread! Come & see the power of powder!

That’s out of this world man. What does it feel like texture wise?

That is one of the coolest things I’ve seen. It reminds me of square wheels swirl ano. That’s really cool!

Very smooth in the gap just a shade of texture in the cups. Things like this is what I’ve been working towards. Trying to get the additional colors completely smooth over the base color. Now some things can’t be helped but I’ve recently stumbled on some new methods that dramatically help the situation.

The possibilities are near endless with this. I have some thoughts on my next one.

I can’t wait for pics of it spinning! It looks very cool.

****faints!!!

Bob…I’m just speechless. They look so amazing.

My fav of that bunch is the violet and gold. Just something about it that I really like.

I’m. I’m breathless.
-passesout-

That Mary looks “antiqued”. Like an artifact of a bygone era.

Game over! Bob wins!

Bob, can you give us your thoughts on powder vs. ano? Durability, playability, etc.?

I have a national powder coating tour coming up and YYE members, only, are $125 per person for a 15 minute show. I’ll be comparing ano and powder as the main topic.

Just kiddin’.

I’ve had a few debates on the ano vs. powder before. Pound for pound you can’t beat ano. It offers a virtual failsafe method of protection and smoothness that is second to none. Can powder rival it? You bet. Properly done powder can provide the same basic properties that ano does. Certain powders have outstanding attributes in the texture department like the flat ano powders. The colors offered in the powder coating field are above that of ano imo. Options in color and combos are near limitless. Application techniques for powder can be manipulated to produce a wide array of finishes, more or less texture, depth of color etc. The same can be said for ano as well but it is more limited.

Playability of powder is on par with ano. Are you going to be able to grind with a high gloss powder as well as a blasted anodized throw? No way. Will the flat ano powder coats grind as well as a blasted ano’d throw? Absolutely!

Durability of powder vs. ano is where the real debate is. Anodization is ungodly hard with hardness levels approaching that of diamonds. It may even be above diamonds but I cant recall if it is. Ano is also amazingly thin even when allowed to build to a greater than usual thickness. Once it kisses the concrete your dings are now permanent accessories to your throw. Ano has an undeniable advantage in the vibe game however. It is difficult to gain noticeable vibe from ano. Baring thread related issues of course. Powder coating is on the opposite end of the spectrum being applied to the surface and building thickness from there. Care needs to be taken when applying powder to keep vibe at bay. Some additional weight is also gained from the powdering process however it is usually about a gram or less.

I like to sum up ano vs. powder like this.

Ano is skin and powder is a glove. Rip your skin and you have issues. Rip your glove and you put on a new one.

So does the powder actually protect the throw a little more by virtue of the glove like nature? You chip the powder coat rather than ding the throw?

You should do a powdercoat that makes the yoyo look “rusty”

Thatd be cool
