I’ve got the Faye Webster pigeon yoyo and I can’t find the details on the bearing to get a new one (it’s unusable no spin at all) so I’ve been looking into lubricants. Is this one good? It says gun lubricant. Or should I just get a basic one off of yoyoexpert or something? If anyone has information on the bearing itself and knows where I can get a new one that would also be great!!
Have you tried cleaning it before doing anything? Is it a shielded bearing?
A lot of people prefer no lubricant on bearings at all!
The SF collab pigeon also looks similar to the SF plstc which uses a C bearing. Maybe try to order one of those?
That will work. You should thin it out and do a 50/50 volume cut with 100% acetone though. Most gun oil is thicker than thin lube, thin lube should have a similar viscosity to water.
Brandon is right, if it’s not spinning cleaning it should be your first step. lube is never a necessity and will only ever be preference, mainly to reduce sound. it introduces friction and will therefore reduce spin time
start by soaking it in 100% acetone or 90% rubbing alcohol for a few min, then put it on the end of a pencil and spin it with your thumb till it dries out and starts spinning. lighter fluid and mineral spirits also work just make sure whatever you use is highly volatile (evaporates quickly) and doesn’t leave a residue
Take a picture of the bearing but I imagine it being a SF collab it’s a standard C bearing like her other yoyo she’s currently selling. If so that’s are very easy to come by.
Regardless easiest first attempt is use a solvent and clean the bearing then dry it. If it doesn’t spin then it’s dead and needs to be replaced if it does spin then just play it dry and don’t even bother with lubricant
It looks a lot thinner than the haha yoyo which I also have, and the screw is very short as well. But once I get home I’ll take a picture and try to clean it
Will 100% do this thank you so much!! I’m pretty new to everything so I wasn’t sure my best option
Will it work better if I just get the regular stuff? Or about the same
If this is being used on a plastic YoYo be careful, acetone will melt plastic. Isopropyl alcohol is a good alternative, it’s only danger is to adhesives and printing
On second thought, buying thin lube gives you an idea of what it’s supposed to be like. I would definitely recommend that. If you somehow use the whole bottle of thin, then you can feel better doing the diy route in the future. I would recommend getting thin lube for yo-yos, particularly if it has a needle applicator.
If you really like the DIY route, Dylan k on YouTube has some good tutorials on diy yoyo lube, and so does Brandon Vu. Next time your order from yoyoexpert, add it to your cart. Can’t go wrong with the yoyojam stuff.
I have been sold by dark matter. Basically just graphite in a carrier (alcohol I assume) for things I want super thin amounts of lubrication on. A few hard throws and sleeps and they go quite and definitely unresponsive. Less sleep than unlubed but not terrible.
I also highly recommend deshielding your bearings for cleaning and lubing. Yes they get dirty quicker but it’s a life saver IMO
