Introducing The Acorn From Slestak75

I’m not sure I can throw an uno reverse on an expired patent :joy: but id rather share it for free. I actually just published the engineering drawings and files for this hardware on my website under the open source MIT license, making it free for anyone to use for whatever they and however they want provided they apply the same license.

Just to keep folks up to date! The first draft models I sent in for quotes, I now have quotes for and they are expensive. Like wow :joy: cutting the pattern in the way I designed would lead to something like a $400 delrin lol. It requires some specialty tooling on a 5 axis machine.

So I’ve been chatting with the shop and we are going to use some tooling that is normally designed for cutting knurling into stuff to cut the pattern without breaking the bank.

Think like this kinda tooling. Should still be able to keep the spirit of the design without robbing any banks. More to come as I collaborate with my shop.

Prototype quote is back down to reasonable costs using that knurling method!

Okay I’m covering the cost of Steve’s prototypes and will be sending them free of charge. I’m making 8 each of the mini and full size. The order is now paid and in with the shop.

Most of the prototype slots are filled but I have a few open slots.

Here’s the deal for my prototypes. I’m selling them at about a 34% loss in exchange for a handshake agreement that you test them out and provide feedback. No funds are due yet, looking for a commitment that once the protos are in and QA’ed that you then pay. These will be here in about a month or so.

Acorn mini prototype (solid copper mr85 responsive) will be $122 - 0 slots remain open.

Acorn prototype (delrin probably unresponsive c bearing) will be $152 - 4 slots remain open.

Purchasing a prototype has some risk, they may not be as performant as you hope, or be a little rough around the edges the trade off is you get in much earlier and you get a unique version of it, plus if I’m never able to bring these to production you also have the only version to exist lol.

If anyone wants to enter the secret prototype lair dm me, first come first serve.

How has this all flown over my head?

I always love it when a fun little joke turns into something like this.

This is a classic case of taking a lemon and turning it into lemonade.

Edit: Not a Flying Lemon of course.

A little fun being had with the printed Acorn! Thanks again @AudreySickburn, as well as for the fun little cube-yo in the box!
Always a pleasure tossing your throws around!

Delrin Acorn slots are still open for those interested!

So impressive!

I’ll need to find some blue polycarbonate filament or something to try to make some more durable redacted cubes.

Oh yeah. That’s much better than what I had.

An absolutely mad idea! Also about the lateral-ist, coolest, most interesting idea I’ve seen for a while.

Good on you, Andy.

Something tells me that one is going to be amazing. At least it looks it!!

It does look beautiful! Don’t mind the weird smudges the shop had placed them in grease and I asked them to clean them and repack vacuum sealed so I don’t have to degrease them all myself which is why there is a second bagged shot.

The shop is stressing because without the grease coating the copper is already beginning to oxidize :joy: they aren’t used to customers who don’t mind patina.
