If you could only have one yo-yo

I would make a very large treehouse in the exact shape of a yo-yo. It would be 25 feet off the ground. It would look exactly like a No Jive.

The only way to get up to it would be by the 25 foot rope (a huge diameter Slick Six) hanging from it.

The only way to enter is with the 1 key that I would wear like a pendant.

I would climb up the rope at night and pull the rope up behind me.

Once inside I would lite a candle so I could see the 1000 yoyos I hid up in the yo-yo treehouse.

…so, that’s what I would have/choose. One huge yo-yo. Only filled with 1000+ smaller yoyos.

For me, probably the MC Magnum Opus. It’s a well balanced yoyo that matches well with my play style. And with side effects, I wouldn’t have to worry about wearing out the threads.

What do you like about the titanic?

Mine will be hands down the YoYoFriends Hummingbird.

So this answer changes like every couple months buuuut right now the one that comes to mind is the copper dunk. It’s such a good all around throw. It’s been my go to ever since I got it and is one that I grab when I leave the house.

If I had to keep only one, it’d be the Butter my girl got me for our anniversary - too much sentimental value (and a cool story) attached to that one to let it go. Honorable mentions: the Hatrick I got when I met Ernie at Nationals 2009, it was the first high end yoyo that I ever bought. Most practical answer is prolly the Free Solo though, since that’s what I use the most, being my EDC.

If I had to let everything go, holy cow! I would probably keep my yoyofreaks your mom, and for a responsive it would be my xbrain to represent the start of it all in the 90s.

It sounds like you might have some titanium yo-yos and I have never touched one before so I’m just curious, What makes titanium worth the cost to you? Is it any smoother or longer spinning?

This will not be some magical, visionary answer for you to write down on the blank page at the end of the Bible. But I will give you a not often mentioned perspective on Titanium yo-yos.

First off, I don’t think Titanium yoyo prices are ‘higher’ because they are waaaay better than other materials used to make yo-yos.

Titanium yo-yos are more expensive because they are more time consuming to make and are harder on the equipment, thus labor and material costs are much higher. So the yo-yos root costs are higher… so the yo-yos retail costs end up higher.

They don’t cost more because they are Super Fly good.

Example::: Wow, that Titanium yoyo costs $600! It must be Awesome if it costs that much🤔

Not necessarily. One maker told me he had enough Ti halves machined to make 60 yo-yos. When the testing was completed, he only had 38 grade A yo-yos. He was compelled to adjust his prices to keep from losing money because of the non ‘A’ loss factor. A few makers keep the prices ‘up there’ because they make short runs of maybe a dozen and you pay for the rarity. And there are another 12 reasons that Ti yo-yos cost a bundle.

Personally, I don’t think Ti yo-yos run circles around non Ti yo-yos.

I like Ti yo-yos for several reasons. They are really durable. You don’t have to be concerned with ano defects or little accidents. They are easy to take care of. The designs are often excellent because Designers would have to be Idiots to even waste time making poor playing designs out of Titanium. Many(not all) Titanium yo-yos make really neat sounds in play. They sing, they ring, they hum, etc… . Especially the bell shapes like the Luftverk 000.

Great designs make yo-yos better regardless of material used.

I have a yoyo called the Ti Radius. It is OUTSTANDING! Easily a top Ti design compared to anything I know of. And it costs around $400. I also have a $45 yoyo called the Elevation. An OUTSTANDING aluminum yoyo. The difference in the prices is waaaay greater than the difference in performance.

But some would say, ‘Well that Ti has to be amazing at 4 bills and that Elevation is probably ok for $45🤔. <> prices can certainly be deceiving and do not necessarily reflect the performance potentials of yo-yos when comparing Ti and non Ti yo-yos.

Bottom line is simple> Titanium yo-yos are fine if you can afford to buy one or two. But not owning a Titanium yoyo should never be something to feel sad about.

Cost is not a great indicator of a high performance yoyo. That is a very poor gauge for reasoning out a yoyo purchase.

I love Ti yo-yos. I certainly have enough of them, lol.

But I spend more quality time throwing: YYF Bi-metal and Infinity, Generalyo Royal 1, One Drop Panorama, Elevation, Dunk and Damian Puckett Wisteria.

Titanium yo-yos are fun to have but certainly not a must have, or I should feel left out if I don’t have one.

Thanks you. You confirmed a lot of what I was thinking about titanium. I’m pretty sure I will get one eventually. I really want that durability for pocket carry if nothing else

My onedrop legendary terrarian. I love this thing and I’ve loved it since the moment I touched it. Super fun throw.

Basically what Mo says below. I play my yoyos, and they get dinged, scratched, dented. So with titanium it’s just more robust, I don’t have to really worry about doing damage thats going to effect it’s play.

This is a topic that has come up over the years and is always fun to kick around.

If I could only HAVE one yoyo, it would be my old-man’s SF-era Tom Kuhn No Jive. It was one of the yoyos I learned to throw on, the one I dinged badly when I wasn’t supposed to be playing with it (snapped a string when I tried for a triple around the world), and the yoyo that was in my pocket when I got married. Full stop, that’s the one.

BUT, if we’re talking about only being able to PLAY one yoyo, then that’s a bit more of a fun conversation for me.

From a zen/enjoyment standpoint, I could be happy throwing a high end wood. I came to the conclusion a while ago that I don’t have the interest or attention span to learn 1A contest combos. It’s just not what I want out of yoyoing. Goofing off with 0A is far more my speed. One of @edhaponik’s eH’s, a TMBR, a nice butterfly No-Jive, etc. Would probably need to be something with a replaceable axle if we’re talking about a a single yoyo forever. But it if magically heals itself, then that would open up the door to some throws from other makers or older eH versions.

From a more practical standpoint, I could also be convinced to choose a slim-ish bearing yoyo that I could run responsive or unresponsive (assuming bearing/pad changes are allowed). A YYF Confusion or Bootcamp Moonshine or OneDrop Deep/Deeper State…something like that. No, it’s not going to be a full on unresponsive beast like a modern 1A throw. But I think it would probably let me get my unresponsive trick fix once in a while. And for me, that would be enough.
