How to start competing in Yo-Yo competitions

How can someone get into competing in yoyo competitions if you live in Wisconsin? My son is 9 years old and is dying to compete, but we live in Wisconsin and I can’t find a single competition. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

i can’t speak for wisconsin, but you started at the right place. this forum has a wealth of info on different group meet-ups.

i’m in florida, and i hear about the yoyo comps and meet-ups here. for bigger comps, you’re looking at regional meet-ups, etc.

I’m not sure what part of Wisconsin you live in but the closest contest I can think of is the Midwest Regional at Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. Looks like it will be June 15, 2024. I’ll post a link below with the information for it. There may be other ones that I’m not aware of/thinking of off the top of my head right now closer.

There are also online contests like I know the online ante Yoyo contest had an under 12 division. https://anteyoyo.com/ Either way I think it would be good to encourage them to start working on a routine.

I saw this, but it’s the Midwest regionals so I thought that he would need to be in a state contest to move into a regional one.

You don’t necessarily need to compete at the state level to move on to a regional. It might give you a leg up if you do well at the state level but some states don’t even have state level contests so regionals can help fill that gap. My first contest was a regional and it was a great experience to get to know what contests are like, to work hard on a routine and to get on stage. I’d highly recommend it if he’s interested!

Thanks! This is great advice, he really wants to compete and Wisconsin is one of those states that doesn’t have a state competition.
