How to maintain different finishes?

Most likely the coating came off over time with use specifically unscrewing which exposed it to corrosion

I’m in this post and don’t approve… I’m a good medicated ball of anxiety. Just don’t let me forget my meds or bad things might happen if I don’t do that thing I did two times prior. (Like washing hands) can’t start my day till the desk is clear. Note it doesn’t have to be clean just can’t have stuff on it. That stuff can go in a corner out of sight for all I care just can’t operate till the thing is done. Brains are dumb.,

Whether it’s carbon or magnetite, the point of why it’s coated with is the same. Tons of brake calipers and other hardware from auto manufacturers are coated with zinc. The purpose of the coating is still to prevent corrosion. Fun fact, a lot of aftermarket parts for cars are cheaper because they don’t have any coating or protection, that’s why when people buy parts for their cars and they open the box, they’re covered in an oily film inside a bag. This is the cheapest way for a aftermarket company to keep their stuff from rusting on the shelf and during shipping.

Anyway, I would argue that just like on the east coast of the US, if you have a rusty part on the car that is breaking down, and it’s in for repair, replace it. That’s common practice. Not necessary 100% of the time, but if you’re going for longevity and reliability, it might be easier to work on in the future if it’s lest rusty. Maybe if your yoyo has a rusty axle or bearing, replace it. If it’s starting to rust now, wiping rust off isn’t going to keep it from rusting again.
