Help! Early Stage Yoyo Collecting Disorder

Do you know this moment in zombie movies where someone is bitten, but he’s not yet a zombie, yet he knows he will become one?

I know I’m infected with YCD, but it hasn’t yet completely broken out.

Any advice how to reverse or stop the infection? Please help me before it’s too late!!!

(wait… is this really the right place to ask this?)

Unless you hire Vito to break both of your hands, this may be irreversible!

Don’t worry, every time you buy a YoYo, you can just tell yourself “okay, this is the last one” and it’s all good

My tips to slow (not stop) the progression:

  • Hide/mute the Buy Sell Trade forum category. You may need to mute some other specific threads.
  • Focus your browsing time on trick videos rather than yoyo pictures and reviews.
  • If you are craving novelty, pick up one of your underused yoyos so it feels new(ish).
  • Make your purchases deliberately. I enjoy trying new techniques, so I try to buy to fill a specific role in my collection to avoid a bunch of similar yoyos.
  • Use purchases as rewards for mastering tricks or real life goals.

Get a 3D printer and make your own yo-yos to scratch that new yoyo itch.

That is most excellent advice.

It certainly worked for me👍

Good advice, (really) appreciate your seriousness on the topic!

First off, that fact that you know this is an issue is great!
Set a strict budget for yourself. Also, ask yourself where does yo-yoing fit into your life. If something like this is going to the focus of your life, you might want to reconsider. Anything temporal in excess is unhealthy.
Yo-yoing is a fantastic hobby, and this is one of the best communities for it. Ensure that yo-yoing doesn’t take away from the most important things in your life. If it does replace anything it should be something that’s not productive, or harmful.

Life is too short and you’re only here once.

Have fun

Thank you. You and @MuppetLabs pointed out good thoughts.

I think yoyoing itself is not and will not be a problem in my life. If I were rich, the desire to collect yoyos wouldn’t be a problem either.

But yeah, I just have to discipline myself and only buy a yoyo on special occasions. Picking up a yoyo that I haven’t played with in a long time for that sense of “newness” is a good idea — I already do that sometimes.

But man… there are so many cool-looking throws I want to try out.

For example:

  • H5 Leaf
  • Flying Lemon
  • Asora
  • Weekender
  • Populist
  • Tangent
  • Unicorn
  • Bishamonten (rainbow)
  • Hybrid Fulvia
  • Zaguri
  • 4Hunna
  • Surveillance

:joy:

Same. Deal. Bro. Just stay clear of the FOMO. Only get one when the time is right.

Edit: also, a good way to try new throws for cheap are Pay It Forwards. I currently have a Parallel Motion because of that. While you don’t get to keep them, it gives you a great idea of what to look for in your next purchase, whenever that is, and you get to try premium yoyos for $5-7.

Collecting yo-yos is a disorder if it causes distress (emotional, financial, etc.)

Depriving oneself of something harmless and enjoyable can also become a disorder.

Be like me, there are so many good throws you can’t decide witch one you want and then not buy one, either that or focus on purchasing more supplies, bearings, pads, etc. maybe that might help

play more. the more you play the less you’re on the forums or store sites. every time you have time to reach for your phone to doom scroll, pick up a yoyo instead. if you do pick up your phone, instead of coming to the forums or a storefront, queue up a tutorial instead and learn something new

that advice, however, is only good if you’re really into the playing angle. if you’re more into the collecting angle, then go nuts (responsibly within your budget). as others have said it’s your happy fun time, do it your way

Very good point @Splizacular

I‘m for sure much more into playing than collecting… BUT it’s so interesting to have yoyos with different feel, style etc.

I would not like to have more yoyos than i can more or less regularly play. I don’t want them to have them displayed but to use them.

Much better to collect tricks than throws though.

This is getting too personal. The symmetry of sentiments is unnerving
Out of curiosity, how many yoyos do you have?
I own 6

(Shooting Star, Canon, Summer Solstice, Terrarian, Spire, Fireball)

In addition to the PIF I mentioned earlier.

totally is! i love it too. consider this, then. the more you play the more you get a feel for what you are working with. this gives you a much richer and deeper understanding of the yoyo, its capability, its strengths and weaknesses. it helps you understand design choices and how they play out during string time. all of this can lead you to a deeper understanding of what you’re looking for in any given purchase and it becomes less impulsive, more thoughtful, and the collection becomes very curated and personal

anyway that has been my experience and angle so far but that’s just what worked for me. good luck at any rate and just remember, however you decide to proceed, if you’re having fun and you’re not broke due to yoyo purchases, you’re doing it right :call_me_hand:
