Google deleting inactive accounts (false alarm -> not youtube!) - But Still Archive now!

Hey all, recently Google announced that they’ll be deleting inactive accounts starting in December 2023 (specifically, 2 years of inactivity). I’m unsure currently if this touches youtube accounts.

This means that there’s a ton of amazing yoyo content out there on youtube and spread across google that should be archived in some way! An example being some sick older videos on this inactive youtube channel:

Ripping videos from youtube in itself is a bit daunting if you aren’t tech savvy, if you are, the tool I currently use is:

GitHub - murrty/youtube-dl-gui: Download/Convert videos from websites without needing to learn command line

If you don’t feel like figuring it out though, feel free to post some neat stuff here so we can archive it.
A neat trick if you are trying to hunt down old content is you can include “before:2008” in your searches (on youtube atleast) and it will only show you results before 2008.

This page can convert a playlist to an excel file, which can help you pull all the urls out:

The tool I linked is fairly easy to use, downloadable directly from here:

Note: I don’t develop this tool, use at own risk. Follow the prompts when you open it, it’s pretty straightforward, feel free to ask if you have questions.

I keep mine in just a bookmark folder, and in firefox right click copying copies all the urls in the folder, I saved them to a text file on my computer, looks like this (these are all old jensen tutorials  ), just one line per url:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBlFGlxMh6M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGDfZZB4bxg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK4xZfuEy60
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsj5oiX-t3Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPZAQsO8drs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljx57P7IwLQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQFyau1J-rs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1c9FkNEjAg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3nr6bWalPk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr-87puDIKk

Then this option in the tool will bulk download them all:

It’ll then download them all, you can follow the progress in the log (Help → Log in the menubar), and by default they should end up somewhere in your downloads folder.

Thanks that’s super helpful! I hadn’t checked that out yet but seems super easy. I guess the only annoying part is sorting what I have bc I don’t need 30 mrmatio tutorials downloaded lol! or maybe I will just get a fresh hard drive and save them all…

Could also just download them all and search through the files afterwards, might be easier since the tool’s file name drop down can put them in separate folders by channel, and then just delete the mrmatio folder

Accounts with videos should be staying up. The announcement of this is worded poorly.

But I’ll still advocate for making local backups of any content you enjoy online. Even if they stay online for now, there’s no guarantee they’ll still be up in another decade+.

Never rely on online hosting.

I wasn’t sure based on the announcement either, but I figured it’s never a bad idea. Lots of old channels have disappeared.

Okay okay I am relieved but will grab things that might vanish and I would be devistated to see them vanish. Already ripped what I could from the sector-y archives and will be on the look out for things I must have. Thanks y’all for the trick death awareness. It is sad to see tricks totally fade…it feels like when the last speaker of a language dies and that language is lost or something dramatic.

Thank you! Never been happier. Sorry for false alarm

That announcement refers to google personal accounts used for email and such, not youtube videos.
