I recently saw someone post something about a yoyo company, thanking for everything he does for the community.
In your own eyes what does it mean to give or give back to the community.
Just curious how everyone thinks or feels about this topic…
Being part of the community and interacting with people can be giving back to the community. Sometimes it’s the little things. Maybe they were just a nice person. Sometimes that’s all that’s matters.
Companies don’t have to include freebies or give discounts or sales. Sometimes they do not do it for profit but because they can. Or to help that individual. Whatever the reason was, I’m just glad to hear about someone actually thanking someone. Thank you is something I think everyone should say more often. Along with “you’re welcome” and the seldom heard anymore “I’m sorry”.
But thanks for asking.
I dont disagree
There’s three things I do to give back:
- Sponsor contests - these are a lot of fun, and sponsors help with funding for the organizers to pay for stuff.
- Sponsoring helpful players - the people I looked up too and learned from, who are willing to help players from very new to very experienced
- Documenting yoyo design - for the next cohort of yoyo designers to be able to learn and do an even better job than we could ever imagine
This has been so helpful and inspiring. Very grateful!
Did you see this post on fb?
I dont remember what thread i was kinda looking at, i was kinda in the rabbit hole. Not on FB unless im BST which hasnt been recent. But could have been i guess?
Its something i think about generally sometimes and was just kind of curious because it applies to other hobbies as well. So yea, just curious how people think about the yoyo community.
Since i started the thread i will contribute to the conv.
2 obvious ways come to mind, i can see making videos and teaching tricks like docpop does or something like ZGRT having a program that gives throws to people who dont have access or the means.
But really in my experience many players and active people have been very helpful and nice, i try to pay it forward as its been forwarded’d upon me
Honestly, i think just doing your part to help fellow throwers in any way, big or small, 1 or 1000 people. That’s giving back to the community.
More than giving back to the community, I think is contributing with the community. It can from a post sharing your thoughts about a throw to sponsor contests or give away yo-yos.
The time people invest in sharing things, making videos, tutorials, enrich the community and that is what matters, I think.
Got this book from @MrYoyoThrower and it covers a big portion of what a yo-yo community is (nice work @MrYoyoThrower by the way)
In my case it means organising local yoyo meet ups.
We just had one today. There was someone present who’d been throwing for five years and never met another thrower.
It was an awesome moment to me.
I feel I’ve given back in numerous ways through the years. Making video tutorials, organizing club meets, creating video productions for individuals and contest, writing reviews and yoyo articles. Honestly, through all of it, I never saw it as giving back, just doing what I do. I guess at a certain point you find yourself naturally giving back without even knowing.
I’m currently reading it. I think it would this book would be a great source for anyone that is new to yo-yo. It’s interesting to read about other people in the community.
Where was the meet?
In the city of Amersfoort in a park. There will be another one in a couple of months. Location and date still to be determined.
Here’s an overview shot from the meet.
Agreed! I am enjoying reading it too.
Thanks so much for sharing! That book was 4 years in the making and I’m very proud of it!
Stay Tuned - I just finished a yoyo coloring book that’s a companion to this, each coloring page is accompanied by a description and bits of information about yoyos, kindof a kids version of this book.
Oh, and thanks to everyone else in here who bought one!
The last part of the book was actually a surprise as I interviewed people. Soooo many people have used yoyo as a mental health/physical health/addiction recovery tool over the years!
Let me know how I can help. I have a gives programme to send yoyos to communities were I can definitely include your colouring books along with the yoyos.
Oh cool! Send me an email to Mryoyothrower@gmail.com and we’ll work something out.
