I decided that in order to find the answer, we had to go back to the beginning. Turns out the first use of the word “float” to describe the play of a yoyo on the YYN forums was on April 3, 2006. In describing the Yoyofactory 401k Espionage:

Simply stunning yoyo.  Got mine today and messed around with a bunch of settings and strings before bliss.  I cleaned the bearing, which is the best duncan sized bearing I’ve ever used (and I’ve tried them all), and have one side at 8 with a thin dif, so almost fully recessed, and one size at 5 with rubber bursts, brasilian poly.  This thing is perfect now.  Handles everything with ease, and there’s just something about it that makes it float around my fingers with more ease than my other yos.  The only yoyo I’m not sure it’s better than yet is my oxy4, but it’s definetly giving it a run for its money.

So there we have it, the birth of floaty. The 401K Espionage must now become the yard stick for float, the scale by which all others are measured. Perhaps the reason why yyfben2 is so coy about the whole thing is that he secretly knew all along that YYF invented float… well Ben, I’m afraid the secret is out!
