Electrical Contact cleaner = Smoothest bearing ever

I know, right!

Super easy and super fast. Just spray and play.

I have been using the mineral spirits/ canned air method since I went unresponsive. Tried this stuff out today.

Works exactly the same, only quicker and easier. I’ll spend the extra 50 cents again when this stuff runs out.

quicker and easier. Well worth 50 cents.

More good news for contact cleaner.

I accidentally overlubed a bearing and my yoyo had gone responsive, so I had a chance to see if this stuff actually cleaned a bearing. This time I didn’t even remove the bearing, just sprayed some on the bearing from the top, spun it by hand, then turned it upside down and blew it out with canned air. The bearing is nice and unresponsive again, so it appears to work for that purpose even if the improved performance hasn’t yet been scientifically verified.

Does it have to be that exact brand, or can it just be contact cleaner?

Probably not, as long as you see the words “Electrical Contact Cleaner”

It should be about the same. Im sure there are minor differences in each.

Please let us know your results and brand that you choose to try.

You need to make sure that it is a “no residue” electrical contact cleaner. Some contact cleaners leave an electrolyte grease, and that stuff is really thick.

Good Call,

That’s my favorite quality in the stuff I use. No Residue is awesome.

I am game. I got a can of this from Lowes. Going to try it out on a Crucial 2 and a OD 10 ball in a little bit. Going to spray, dry and play it for a week and see how it goes.

Nice, more postive results.

Heres another positive on it. Used just like I said ^. While the 10 Ball is not dead quiet but it still spins great. I could lube it and knock out the noise but its in a DM2 so it is not bad at all. Crucial bearing is in a Whip with the same results. This is a quicker way to clean than Lighter Fluid like I am used to. I deshield then I put the bearing on a bent coat hanger, go outside and spray it down good then spin dry on a pencil. Done.

So I finally made a trip to Lowes and picked up a can - mark me down as a believer!

I actually cleaned out a couple sets, spun them for a bit and they just hummed… then I put some thin lube in, and they slowed down, a lot. Where as before the cleaning - the lube kept them going faster…

I know there are those out there that play ‘dry’ - which always gave me a puzzled look on my face. But after cleaning with this stuff, I understand why play dry… (and yes, I re-cleaned the newly cleaned and re-lubed bearing).

Anyhow - great find, thought I’d post this to bring it back up the forum so others who haven’t seen it will… great find!

Awesome!!

I play dry and I love it. Glad the info is becoming useful to more and more in the community.

Since I have had to clean more bearings and have been testing a couple of bearings with it, I will say that this has been great stuff to use. So much easier than doing a full lighter fluid bath and lube. Deshield, spray, spin, reshield and done. Super simple. Just did 3 bearings last night in no time. Ones that I have cleaned and lubed before… do not get lubed after spraying with this. Been a great improvement in r.p.m.

This has been a very useful tip so big thanks to Turtle.

I’m the original Poster,

…so your welcome!

BTW
DO NOT USE THIS STUFF ON TERRAPIN X BEARINGS

I have gotten so used to cleaning my bearings with this that I accidentally sprayed it on a Terrapin X. I know they are special with some kind of voodoo on them to gain performance. And it is recomended that they are to only be cleaned with water and dried with canned air. Heed this.

This stuff a cleaned off all the voodoo and left the bearing VERY loud and scratchy. I have countless 10balls and specs, so it isn’t a huge loss for me, but I wanted to share my experience as it may help others.

This will not discourage me from using this stuff on any of my other bearings in any way. I still love it and will continue to advocate its use. Just not on Terrapin X

I think he was referring to the “tip” on not to lube after using the spray…

Actually both of you…lol. Somehow I got mixed up again. Dang pain meds.

I just tried it, works great and binds very nicely.

Hi All,

This was definitely a great tip and a thumbs up to the OP and everyone who shared their experiences.
My One Drop 10ball went responsive in my DM2 and gritty a few days ago. Throwing alot did smooth it out some but it was still responsive. I was afraid to do any whips or lacerations due to my knuckles hurting from unexpected returns

Was as simple as everyone has stated. Take bearing out of yoyo and put on pencil. Spray till wet, then spin a few times until dry!!! Voila, back to unresponsive play
Was pretty silent but not as silent as when i put it on brand new. My wife won’t complain too much about the noise. Also she hasn’t noticed the dent in the wood floor from an errant throw  Should probably try to cover that with a rug or blame it on the kids.

However, please note that you should be a little careful when taking the cap off the contact cleaner can… In my excitement i opened the cap and took the nozzle off also. Had to look around the basement floor for it…

Didn’t bother to deshield the bearing or bother to re-lube. Bought the same contact cleaner from Lowes in Paramus, it’s $8.30 so it’ll be $8.88 w/tax.

thanks again and happy yo-ing to everyone,

Regards,
