Ok folks I’m still looking for a responsive and I’ve narrowed it down to a Duncan butterfly aluminum with the delrin caps or I’m definitely going with a deepest state but I want to know who has this Duncan and what are your thoughts.
I need a responsive in my life and the Duncan with delrin caps looks nice. No ugly branding just a clean looking yoyo
I have both Butterfly ALs and neither is my favorite, in spite of being a huge fan of both the OG and the XT.
Between them I’d get the Deepest State with the Grease Bucket. OneDrop seems like they’ll do more runs whereas with the Butterfly AL you’ll be resigned to the BST.
I wouldn’t recommend AL Butterflys to beginners as they are finicky with set up, a lot of threads on this if you search. The 2023 AL version actually plays really good without the caps, but these caps are known to warp and you might not have a choice. If you tinker you can get them to remain flat and stay on. The Weekender and Confusion series are just better A bearing players in this category.
I mirror Keith’s feelings on this. I felt like I had to have both versions of the AL and neither was great. It took a lot of tuning to get them…ok.
Appreciate it folks. I found a brand new onedrop deepest state jawbreaker for 82 shipped so I jumped on it. The Duncan looks like a nice yo-yo It was on my list. I told my wife that I’m gonna stop buying yoyos for awhile now that I have 6 unresponsive and now a responsive. I want to focus on practicing and less buying.
I’m going to start from the beginning. Start with all responsive tricks then move to unresponsive. To be honest I’m getting tired of buy buy buy then not practice.
I sold x2 of my yo-yos the MK1 ring bearer and my sprout and used the sprout money to buy the deepest state
I will prepare you before hand. The States are all semi-responsive out of the box. The Greasebucket bearing is a grease filled bearing that makes it play very responsive. So if it doesn’t come with a Greasebucket you may not be fully happy with it. I know you have spent more than you’d like and the thought of spending more is not happy times, so… if you get the Deepest State and it’s not responsive enough for you I’ll offer a few suggestions.
You have a very solid plan in place, do make sure you pickup a grease bucket if you haven’t already.
Starting responsive will help you big time in the long run from my experience. If you go to the channel below and check out his playlists, it’ll be a great guide on learning responsive.
Firstly, you can grease the bearing that comes in it yourself. It’s not too difficult and I don’t mind coaching you through it if you’d like.
Secondly you could try double looping the string as a temporary solution you might even like. I can also explain that if needed.
Third, I don’t mind sending you a greased bearing for your Deepest State that I know you’ll enjoy and it will give you reliable maintenance free response for a long time. No charge of course just need you to DM your address to me. It’s very easy to get incredible response from the Deepest State so if you are a tad underwhelmed when you get it don’t despair.
Thanks to both of you. The problem is is that I think jumping into unresponsive and not going responsive first has been frustrating me. I’m also overthinking far too much.
So I sat down last night and I’m like you know what I want to learn but I think I need to start from the beginning which I should have done in the first place. I should have bought a responsive yo-yo and learned responsive and then moved up to unresponsive. Unresponsive is fun, but it’s definitely made me more frustrated so I have a plan in place.
The jawbreaker does not come with the grease bucket bearing it comes with the semi-responsive one. I’ll order one so I have it and then I’ll go from there and see which way I like to go. I actually found some deepest state yo-yos on a website called slower things which is a retailer for one drop and they had the jawbreaker and a blue deepest state in stock. So if anybody’s interested in a deep estate maybe hit up that website which can be found on the OneDrop site
If you’re located in the US the Butterfly XT is a great $5 responsive starter and is widely available at Target.
I’ve never heard of Slower Things, but it looks like a cool site, with a cool premise.
Neither have I I found it on the OneDrop retailers page and saw they had deepest states for sale so I jumped on it and they have 20% off right now
FWIW the bearing out of your butterfly XT is essentially the same as a grease bucket. they are full-size c bearings very heavily loaded up with thick silicone, they just have a steel shield instead of a rubberized plastic shield.
That’s good to know because the butterfly XT is actually broken though so the bearing might come in handy then
Just wanted to say I have both butterfly ALs and I love the 2023. The earlier model is too narrow and too dense. It’s almost dangerous to throw, like putting a rock on a string. But 2023 version is a great Every Day Carry (EDC).
I feel compelled to say something because I have seen it get a lot of hate but I’m not sure why. It plays, looks, and weighs like one of the 1970s plastic Duncan butterflies, which I enjoy . I put a sticker on one side and left the other blank.
It’s one of the best responsive yoyos for what you are after, which is a responsive yoyo that also handles string tricks very well. You can do expert level tricks up to 2 string layers like whips, boing e boing, kamikaze / and what / spirit bomb, but you can also shoot the moon and tug respond.
There are places and times where it can go for as low as 35 dollars. A comparable throw would be the turbo confusion, also 35$, but the cork response snags more often and won’t be as forgiving with 2 or more string layers.
The deepest state is an excellent yoyo and probably the most high quality and reliable of the afore mentioned, but it is simply really popular right now because it came just out in October and got two re releases. The hype train is still going. It’s 70 to 100$, and then 300 for the titanium version!. Of course it’s great. But just remember that certain responsives stand the test of time and others are just the current fad. We’re all in the honeymoon phase with the deepest state.
I would also advise that popular opinion on responsives is only slightly helpful, because the feel of a responsive throw is much more varied and particular, so your taste will usually not match the popular status quo. So I figure I’m too late here but In my opinion, one should buy cheaper throws more like 35 to 50 dollar range until you know what you want. I only bought a deepest state after I had owned a previous entry in that series and a hundred responsives!

if you’re looking for responsive 1A specifically my faves are the FH1, the First Base, and the Shooting Star. IIRC, the First Base and Shooting Star in some editions come with both responsive and unresponsive. All are highly affordable and in stock at retailers.
If you specifically want a slim 1A responsive, I don’t have a great rec 
That YoyoRecreation 5ive is pretty fun and affordable for slim 1A. They did a metal version of it too. It was frustrating at first, but SO satisfying when I did land it that I kept at it and it’s really improved my accuracy.
I picked up a deepest state and it is so awesome, I love it. It fixed the issues I had with the original deep state and its size is just right. Highly recommend
