I have many yoyos I want to use for 5As, but I am very specific with my counterweight (it has to match yoyo & string, be good weighted, etc)
Right now I use machined delrin dice from Duncan that come with my Freehand MG, it weigh 10.45g
I want to buy some acrylic DND dices (so many amazing color!) to drill and make counterweights with, so I can pick many colors, but I am unsure the weight of each dices, or what configuration of dice is best for the weights I desire.
I need to have 9-11g counterweight with any configuration of dice + side sizes. Have anybody here experienced with making correct weight counterweight with acrylic DND dices?
Here is what chagpt tell me: (chatgpt never accurate in my experiences but I thought I add this)
D3 (3-sided die): a true triangular D3 weighs around 1-2 grams.
D4 (4-sided die): Typically weighs 3-5 grams.
D6 (6-sided die): The classic cube die weighs about 5-7 grams.
D8 (8-sided die): Usually weighs 6-8 grams.
D10 (10-sided die): Averages 7-9 grams.
D12 (12-sided die): Typically weighs 9-11 grams.
D20 (20-sided die): The iconic icosahedral die weighs around 10-13 grams.
I must take account for the small hole being drilled through,
What is your experience with this, and the final weight configurations of your dices?
is it better to use a D20 outright?
or a combination like d3+d12?
i remember maybe people use two D6 in past, but I do not know the weight of this usually.
Please, 5A dicemasters provide your knowledge to me. I want shiny acrylic dices for my 5A yoyos but I do not want to spend $100 to mix and match dice and have 30 dices left over that I cannot use lol!
ps. the weight is important for 10-11g, some of you crazy people use 15g metal nuts and stuff for 5A. I cannot do this without being suicidal when I play 5a. I understand not all dices are made equals in weights, but assume most acrylic dices will be within one tenth of gram. i can also add small bead to polish weights off for add 0.2
Youre best off weighing your dice specifically. I have a handful of bulk AliExpress dice that i intended to use for cws, and the weight is typically between 3-5.5g. i only drilled 2 d20s that were 4.5g ish for a 9.5ish final weight with a bead
Unless you like double dice, i wouldn’t recommend this. I find double dice awkward to hold/catch, and drilling them takes more effort than ordering a cw of your shape/color/material preference.
Sounds like you’ve already got some good info & will probably get more from other experienced DIYers, but I emailed a shop and asked if they could weigh what I wanted to turn into a counterweight, and they kindly obliged.
Quality dice are usually made from resin or something heavier to have a nicer feel in the hand. If you want to go with acrylic you want the d30 from the extended set, 10g
I don’t like double dice for probably the same reasons as almost everyone else who tried the same thing, but you might be one the rare few who enjoy it.
You can also order a resin casting mold and colour it however you want
