Coin collectors

Hey so my son has got into collecting coins recently. He has a few not super rare but neat to him coins that family have given him and he’s super interested in it.

Where would I go to find more interesting coins. Also this gave me the thought the tooth fairy could bring gold dollar coins but where do I even source those?

Hoping someone more knowledgeable than I can point me in the right direction. I did look at the reserve but it felt like collector stuff when I went to the site the fed send folks to. Maybe that’s just that value but idk maybe there’s a weird second hand unsorted market or something I can get in on I’m unaware of

I can’t give you any advice, sadly, but if your boy would like to have some swiss coins, then I would be happy to send him a set. Whats the birthyear of him? Maybe I find one or more Coins with his year on it, could be neat for him. Idk.

PM if you want that.

My grandfather used to buy us all mint coin cases every year for Christmas. Its a good investment collection especially the silver sets. I think he bought direct from the gov.

He could go after all the state quarters. I’m not a collector by any means but when the new quarts started to hit the market, I got involved with some sort of program that would send MIB sets (one from each mint location) and albums. They’re probably not worth all that much but maybe someday.

We’ve got a pretty cool collection of $2 bills too. Not coins but somewhat collectible.

Do a search for rare pennie’s. There are a few very valuable that can be found…. Maybe in his pocket, haha!

I’ve always been interested in coins so I’m interested to see where this thread goes.

@Sven …. That’s a cool idea too. I hang on to coins from around the world as I travel.

I’ve collected lots of buffalo nickles, old silver coins such as mercury dimes, half dollars etc, 1oz silver coins from various countries, and 1/10 oz gold eagles. I bought almost everything off eBay. Probably not the cheapest route, but everything you could want is there. 1oz silver eagles are probably your best bet.

Great. Then kick me a PM with your details, so I know where to send the letter to. :slightly_smiling_face:

I just remembered a youtube series I watched almpost a year ago from a coin expert.

And with a quick google, I found out that the relateted shop is harrys coin shop. They are in Oregan but maybe this will send you and your son on the right path to a dealer network or smt.

Historically, rare gold coins are the single best investment you can make.

Coin collecting comes in different flavors. If your son is more interested in the places that the coins come from, then ‘collecting’ is as easy as finding exotic coins in places like eBay; or your local coin shop. Condition is not as important as the place of origin to these young collectors.

Coin collecting in the classic sense, however, involves collecting high-grade coins that are either very old, rare, or new. This involves understanding the rarity and the market to know what you should be paying; for what grade of coin. A good place to start is a reputable, local coin dealer.

Look into if there are any coin conventions in your area. I have fond memories of being taken to coin conventions as a kid with my grandparents, who were very into collecting coins. The conventions were an awesome place to get to see a massive assortment of all different types of coins. I’d always come away with some cool freebies for being a kid. Great memories tbh.

Grab some Dansco albums and set a goal. That’s how I’ve done it.

I have several Dansco and Whitman albums I’m working on at any given moment. I am, however, a hunter. I do not partake in purchasing coins unless they’re really hard to find or are made of silver (gold is far above my price range).

My favorite pastime was roll hunting. I LIVED FOR ROLL HUNTING. However, banks around me have cracked down on that and I can’t pump and dump where I live since I don’t bank with any banks in town. I’m sure they’d get annoyed with me coming in and withdrawing boxes of change all the time in a small town.

Quarters are great right now for simple collecting. 50 states series, America the beautiful, the new American women series, all still circulating and readily available in your pocket change. Spice it up with a PDS book so now you have to find all the mints. Also fun to find those rare West Point coins out and about. I found three early on, never again. But like I said, I’m severely limited now that I moved.

All I’m going to say is to avoid Littleton, except for the once a year they sell you a 2 dollar bill for 1 dollar. It’s the only deal I consistently buy that won’t bite me later. Because it’s 2 bucks for a buck. Instant money doubling.

PS: in search of that elusive 1909 VDB. I WILL FIND ONE. But I may have to bite the bullet and just buy one. Woe is me.

That’s fair. You also hit it next question which was where do people get 2 dollar bills. That’s a me question not my son. Funny enough he sees coins as more valuable than paper money cause they are heavier and bigger is more. Not true but good for my wallet for now.

You can ask any bank for 2 dollar bills. They all have them, we just don’t use them really. I wanted to do bill searching but I’m not pulling a grand out of my account to look for old bills on my kitchen table haha. Kinda scary.

I can send you some Australian coins if you like. Drop me your address in a discord DM and I’ll send them off to you.

I so appreciate everyone who has reached out. I almost feel like an international pan handler over here lol. But seriously those who have reached out about international coins I truely appreciate you all.

I’ll probably get my son a state quarter album so he can start hunting state quarters too.

Thank you @Sven

My son loved this and we spent a few hours taking pictures and then searching information about each coin and the country they came from.

Had to trick my daughter and throw a few quarters in the mailer and say they where for her lol

She however just wants to buy a squishmellow. At least she has priorities. She was so sad my YoYo friends didn’t send her money. Not sure if that’s really the lesson we are trying to teach but whatever.
