When going for the hop I always use two fingers, pointer and middle. once you’ve landed it and its stable, pull out one. You need a harder throw but I’ve found it reduces the accuracy. As a bonus it allows you to balance on spikes on a regular throw without having to land directly on it. I’ve been able to get a locked finger spin with an og edge dimple after a few attempts.

You can initiate the DNA from a regular laceration with a side style throw as well no problem.

Ok I played around with it and I was able to do it if I whipped it like a regular bind from a fingerspin and then initiated the DNA, the same way you did. Glad to know it’s possible.
Whipping it directly into the DNA gives you more string to form the helix with, which looks a little better imo, but the string was just rejecting immediately when I tried that after throwing side style.
Okay I’m surprised nobody has given this tip yet. But in my opinion this is the most important thing when learning to finger spin especially if ur trying to do it properly by hopping the yo-yo onto ur finger. Definitely what everyone has said,
But additionally and most importantly, make sure to land it on ur fingernail!! Don’t try to do the skin part if ur fingertip, and don’t try to get it right in the middle where it’s like ur half on ur skin/half on nail. Just hop it up and catch it on ur fingernail only. Bend ur finger slightly inward so that it makes contact just with ur nail and then balance it there.
The second most important tip I can give. I realized after I started hitting, once I realized how easy it is I was trying to figure out why the hell it was so hard to catch it before. And. The big difference was that I was just concentrating way too hard on the landing and it would pop right off. The trick is to pretend u already know how to do and when u go to catch it just pretend like you’ve caught it a million times before, like it’s no big deal. Or with, like, some swag. Theres a delicate balance where u have to cushion the catch just slightly. Don’t hold ur finger where u want the yo-yo to land. Position ur finger where the yoyo is going to land and intercept it with ur fingernail. The same way you would catch idk, like a can of soda if someone tossed it to u from across the room.

This is also good advice. I focused on getting it on my nail as soon as I noticed that it puttered out when it touched skin.
