So what is the best type and thickness of string to put on a Duncan Imperial?
I can’t quite tell how an Imperial achieves tug response; I don’t see a star response, for instance. I want a string that provides good, snappy tug response while also allowing for a Sleeper or Around the World now and then. The original string that comes with an Imperial seems to work pretty well, but I’m not sure what kind of string that is, or if there is any other kind of string that would be considered an upgrade.
the typical plastic Imperial is starburst response just like the butterfly. i’ve been using duncan polly and it seems to be a medium thickness. for looping purposes you might want thinner string like type 6… usually cotton type 10 is good all around string, as well. its hard to say what is best because its depends on user preferences.
I have a YoyoStringLabs Type X (poly) string on it now and it has trouble engaging the starburst response unless the string has a ton of torsion, and even then it doesn’t feel as snappy as the stock Duncan string with the same amount of torsion.
I have a tendency to just adjust torsion on the fly to make the string work better regardless of string. i’m not picky about string, just use what i got (really thick string is bad though, don’t bother) a thinner string might be better because it allows for more torsion for looping, and will increase responsiveness as it gets tighter, but not so thick as to be a problem. Ive used thin and medium strings, cotton, poly, and 50/50 and i don’t really have issue with any on the Duncan butterfly, i just adjust torsion with some sidewinders and go.
