Ben's Alphabetacular Yoyo Reviews: W1ld Unbound

I know this isn’t exactly a new release, but I thought I would write about this yoyo anyways as I like it.

I got mine at the 2025 WYYC from the mystery boxes that W1ld was selling for 50-60 USD if my memory serves. When I opened said box up, I was initially solely happy that I got a bimetal from a box and therefore won in gambling, but was also somewhat skeptical due to it being a bimetal whose rims were also VERY much on the inside (I am a sucker for powerful throws with large diameter or chunky rims). Upon reading the description of the yoyo I became even more skeptical- a bimetal 1a throw based off of a 4a offstring? Give me a break, this is surely a gimmick.

I should have known better than to doubt W1ld, which might be my second favorite brand only behind C3. While initially underwhelming due to the thoughts I had planted in my head, the Unbound quickly grew on me as a very pleasant, laid-back throw that offers a decent amount of performance while indeed having a throwing sensation somewhat similar to a 4a yoyo in play. It is very maneuverable yet maintains excellent string presence due to its unique weighting. While not exactly a powerhouse, it still has decent spin time and REALLY shines in 5a. The design is also comfortable in the hand and just pleasing to look at due to its somewhat complicated cup design and classic Wilderness-shape profile (ofc it is narrower than the Wilderness yoyo by around 6mm, but it still has the same general shape, just compacted). I only wish that the Unbound came with a slightly wider gap- i use thick string very frequently and I am not skilled enough to overcome a lot of slack gt-type tricks on this yoyo when I put a large amount of string in the gap. I know that this is also partially a skill issue, but it feels rather limiting when I can do it on yoyos with even a 0.1mm wider gap.

Overall, great yoyo. I would have happily payed the full pricetag for it (100 USD on YYE).

I actually was hoping for one of these from the very same W1LD mystery boxes at nats 25 and I got one too! I love it. It really is a pretty unique-playing bimetal.

I bet if you swapped the pads for some slightly recessed permatex ultra grey you could get away with thicker strings!

You’re probably right. I just suck at permatex application and just need to practice on one of my beaters first.

if it already has permatex just keep playing it, the silicone wears down and you’ll eventually NEED the thicker strings lol

I played two of these this weekend (both mystery box pulls) and I loved both of them

I’m probably gonna do a trade next club meet for one of them
