Beginner yoyo or advanced

While it may not be the route you want… it is a good choice as there are some really nice plastics out for beginners. In the meantime, continue to peruse the forums and see what’s out there right now. Look at the stores and if you see something you like, come back here and see if there’s any talk about it. Understand, though, that just because a bunch of people like a throw doesn’t mean that you will. Yo-yo preferences are very personal. So try to learn to understand what you prefer and apply that to your search. Also, ask questions. There’s always someone willing to help out. Hope you’ll let us know what you got and how your journey proceeds.

This is very true. I use pretty much everything but the norm. I prefer narrower and smaller diameter, but that isn’t the norm! Preferences really shape your experience. All specs are not objective truths but subjective. I can jam with a pocket rocket, but for a lot of people they seem to prefer midrange.

For example. Weight affects how you play. A heavier yoyo will naturally spin longer, and be more stable if it’s rim weighted too. However, a lighter yoyo will be less stable, but play quicker. A bigger yoyo will help you catch it on the string easier, but it feels bigger in the hand and can hit the strings in denser string tricks. A smaller one is harder to land on the string, but better at remaining compact on dense string tricks. It’s all a matter of preference, really.

And a lot of people are eager to help you out if your collection is small here.

The problem is though is that I don’t know what stores have yo-yos we don’t really have toy stores where I’m at and all we have is really like a Walmart so there’s not really a chance to try anything.

I’m not sure where I would even look for yo-yos in stores. I don’t mind if I buy plastic or metal it doesn’t matter to me. I just appreciate everybody being so kind. I don’t generally join forums or groups because there’s always the negativity of people but so far everybody’s been kind and helpful.

Well.. I will say yoyos are extremely subjective. If there’s no “right” answer, there’s nothing to argue about. Plus around here a lot of us are casual throwers. And besides, who cares what’s best, when we can also argue what’s best looking?

Actual yo-yo stores are hard to find these days. Mostly the retailers are online, such as Yoyo Expert. The menu under the red box in the upper left corner will have a “Shop” tab that will take you to the store and there is much to wonder at there.
