Well I’m sold, I’ll ask for steam ids once I actually pick one up. My good friend has one also, so it seems like it’d be a good choice. I’ve just been limping my OG launch switch along lol
Steam Deck is like the Switch, but better. It’s like if the Switch was more capable. Or capable, at all.
I mean, sure, Switch is great for playing Nintendo games [because they’d rather you either only buy from them (ignoring the fact that some games don’t even have modern playable counterparts) or just not play them], but for everything else (YES, even non-Nintendo games already available on the Switch), Steam Deck [possibly even other portable PCs, but then you’d have to use shudder Windows (another fabulous company)].
Blurred for readability
Yeah it would be great to work though my (admittedly small) steam library on the go, and enjoy some multiplayer as well. Switch is cool but, well, ya know…
Edit: OMG ON THE GO OG MW2?!? BETTER ON THE GO SKYRIM?!?
As long as your multiplayer game doesn’t require a rootkit anti-cheat system like EasyCheat or whatever it’s called, you can play multiplayer games
If you’re planning to main multiplayer games that require rootkit anti-cheat systems, I’d go for a
Windows
based platform. That’s the one thing they technically have over SD. Thankfully, I’m friend-less smart and never got into multiplayer games in the first place. And even then, if I do play multiplayer, I tend to prefer custom matches.
Skyrim on the go (with the option to install mods, if that’s your thing) is probably the most fun way to play Skyrim
Well, multiplayer also isn’t really my thing entirely, I just used to love MW2 and have it in my steam library. Those
Matches are user hosted I think, it’s weird how the online works for that now, you can end up in some wild modded lobbies.
I do mostly like single player stuff tho. I’m over the CoD scene, just annoying to play at this point lol.
EAC works on steam deck IF the devs check the box that lets it work
Since this theoretically introduces more vulnerability, some games like fortnite and apex legends don’t allow it
Riot’s vanguard anti cheat for league, val, and 2xko doesn’t work on proton/linux at all though
You are correct, but let’s face it, there’s not enough market share of linux players to make it worth “checking the box”.
Honestly, it’s easier to just say they don’t work than offer a pipe dream
Congrats on making the push. Big props.
Pick a hotel brand and use them exclusively. The points are great for free stays and other perks. I haven’t paid for a personal hotel in 15 years.
Will you get a company card or have to use your own and expense the charges?
Think points!!
I’m retired now, but I used to travel often. Some assignments constantly. I predominantly would go to repeat locations typically for 3-4 days, making “second homes” in those locations.
Did most shopping out of town - any “chore” that didn’t require me to be at home. One summer, played on vendors softball team. Spotted enjoying Berlin Auto Show and was asked to be emergency fill in speaker. I have at least a dozen more similar not gaming alone in hotel room stories. ![]()
Travel gave me an opportunity to experience other cities. When in Rome …
I did get tired of it after a few years. I often had to think what side was the gas tank on my own car. It was tiring of planning so far ahead enough so no surprises greeted me when getting home.
Thought I would totally be glad to stop travel, but I did realize that drive time, though not obvious, provided alone time that created unexpected value to seemingly mindless trips giving me opportunity to sort stuff out in my head.
I agree about making the best of the where I will be traveling to. The sr tech I talked said he loves to explore the cities he’s in to kill the down time.
I’m looking forward to finding restaurants with live music for dinners and find weird thrift stores and meeting all kinds of different people and seeing different landscapes. I used to drive around for fun in my 20’s, the road is calling.
Just worried I’m gonna miss the fam in the first halves of the weeks while I’m gone. It’ll be worth it in the end tho, financially at the very least lolol
Good luck with your future endeavors!
I personally have gone the other direction and will gladly take a pay cut and figure it out if I get more quality time with family. Idk my kids are young and won’t be this age again. I value being in their lives and a part of their memories to the point I’ve actively turned down opportunities that would bring me to a new tax bracket because in the end money doesn’t come with you when you die. Idk I got really reflective after my dad passed 8 years back and realized the only memories I had with him where when i would jump in the fiat bed and go to work with him during the summer which I am old enough that was a thing I could do back then. My siblings didn’t get that so they don’t really have many good memories of my dad.
Don’t get me wrong it’s admirable to provide for family and I’m blessed to have found a niche that affords me both work from home and my wife being a stay at home mom but I also missed the first two years of my sons life and seeing my daughters grow up I realize how much I missed and how fast it all passed by me.
Just remember no matter how tired you are make the family time quality. You will regret it if you’re burned out and stressed and unable to engage properly in those fleeting hours with the fam.

I’m… I’m not going away forever ![]()

Watch for chronic editing:
The time away is something that I am really struggling with, my son‘s four years old now, and I see him in the morning for about half an hour while I get ready, at lunch for about 15 min; and at night after work for about 2 hours, most of which is spent cleaning up and helping with dinner, or he’s glued to the tv because it’s finally tv time. I’ll now be missing out on seeing him during those times Monday through Thursday… I’ve talked this over with my wife, many hours of talk about it. I think while I won’t be there for as many hours, I will be more engaged, more precious and intentional with the time I spend. I also plan to utilize FaceTime a bunch, bring him back treasures from my adventures, etc. it will be a change but I don’t think I’m disappearing from his life
Also: we are in a position financially where I can no turn this offer down. Telling me family time is more valuable will no dig us out of this horrible horrible hole, neither will better budgeting and making the best of our current jobs, unfortunately. A series of life events and my wife’s employment situation and caretaking of her mother set us in a baaaad way monetarily.
Burn your credit cards
Also the end goal of my boss is to have me be my areas service guy so I won’t be traveling so severely in about a year, according to him. He’s also one of my best friends so I know he will take care of me and if I’m struggling with the time away he will help me
I know. At my peak travel I was getting 3-6 hours a week of quality waking time with my family including weekends . It’s never enough but that was hard.
Oh MAN!!! Yeah that’s super hard. I would not have taken the job if that’s what they were offering me.
Maaaaaybe if we’re talkin fat 6 figures, but that’s rough, so probably not. I can see why you don’t do that any more
I do have a little advice. Set your boundaries early and reinforce them often. If you let your employer get away with Sood creep they will take it and assume you’re fine with it. Saying no to non critical asks is never a bad thing and often respected if done right and reason given is sound. Especially if you offer something else as an alternative. Example I went to ny for a network upgrade. Finished the work got hone and was called next morning asking if I could fly right back to the same office because the marketing team printer was having issues. I confirmed over the phone it sounded like it had nothing to do with the work I had done and that the alternate printers would tide them over until the next week and declined to fly back in
The same week.
Alternatively I did a project in Chicago got home that night and we had a major outage and I got on a plane red eye and solved the outage the am of that next day.
One was an emergency the other an inconvenience. Just ensure you are considered reliable and able to be counted on and no one will question when you use your judgement and suggest a better option or delay travel to reduce the burden on yourself.
Also build yourself around your team. Sure being a key person is job security but I’ve been let go from places as key person before. More important to maintain some work life balance and have folks that can cover you if you can rely on to help when you need it vs being the lunch pin with no backup or support.
I also get being at a point the money is not something you can turn down. Totally do what’s best for your family. Just noting my own pitfalls and experiences. If I had a do over I would have tried to be more present those few first years I was traveling so much.
