7075 is more dense than 6061. This makes the 7075 yoyo carry more momentum per unit of volume. Some people think this gives the yoyo greater speed from string to string as well as increased spin-time due to more momentum in the same throw when compared with 6061.
Ever throw a Turning Point or YYR? They all can go for long times and still return to your hand with a resounding thump even after a long combo; Not the pathetic finishing bind that many “floaty” 6061 yoyos give.
Why are Japanese players so fast? I think that 7075 has ALOT to do with this. Check the vids from Worlds this year. The American players are almost ponderously-slow when compared to a Marcus Koh or Christopher Chia. Yeah, they have lots of twisty-stringy-spirit-bomby tricks (boooooring), but the speed and consequently points, lie in the hands of the Asian players.
Nope this is just silly and has everything to do with the weight and design of the yoyo, nothing to do with the alloy. Suggest you watch some of those same Japanese players throw 6061 throws or better yet plastics then maybe you’ll realize it’s not about the material. Plus if all you care about is speed tricks then you’re part of the reason world’s finals were so terribly boring and lacking in originality this year.
The question of speed/tricks/scoring is one that definitely deserves a thorough discussion. Perhaps another thread. The alternative to speed, however, seems to be the spirit-bomb-twisty-knotty stuff that I saw Harold Owens doing. I suppose the exciting part about that is waiting to see if Harold Owens will indeed knot his string (the suspense is just KILLING me…). I for one would rather watch the speed and mastery of Marcus Koh over these kinds of ritualistic tricks anyday.
The issue of scoring, however, does need discussion. Should it be absolute or a 10-point system like in gymnastics? Perhaps the only way that the Asians can be de-throned is with rule-changes (Beware Prague…?) that place greater emphasis on style and “degree of difficulty” rather than piling on the points with speed and precision. Food for thought.
As for the 6061 being just as good: If that were true - then why are almost all JP throws 7075? If it plays the same and is less expensive to buy and machine, why use 7075 if it is not any better? The answer seems obvious to me.
